Conference realignment rumor mill

Was on another board and someone said that the Big East is looking into the idea of adding TCU.

A friend of mine thinks that it's inevitable TCU will leave the MWC.

To the Big 12? Possible except a lot of people I talk to here in Oklahoma (and the media here) think that the Big 12 will eventually close up shop.

To the SEC? Highly doubt to since they only want one private school (Vanderbilt) in it.

Big East and a team from Texas, is that really east? Now the real point the Big East is weaker than the MWC in terms of good schools. The only reason any team would consider going to the Big Easy I mean east is they are BCS qualifying conference and IMHO that may not be for to much longer as the conference as a whole sucks.

Well, the Big Least was trying to get Villanova's football team to join except VU was concerned about the cost of moving up from the I-AA (FCS) level. Thus why I think the Montana schools won't join the WAC.

Speaking of which, the WAC is looking to add a few I-AA schools, one of which that has yet to play a down of football, Texas-San Antonio.

Denver could join as a non-fotball member as well.

I honestly think three conference will be dead soon.
Big East
WAC
Big 12

Texas State, UTSA, Denver, and Seattle all made presentations to the WAC today. Montana was in attendance but did not give a presentation.

Do any of you think the WAC can survive with those schools joining? 2 for all sports and 2 for everything except football.

Well what can I say when you are looking to add power houses like that but the WAC is desperate.

That tells me UM's feasability study did not turn up favorable results for the move-up crowd.

Just take a quick look over on the MWC board. First thing I saw going over there this morning were a nunch of topics about TCU talking to the Big East.

WTF is happening? Especially in the middle of the season? :tickedoff:

I merged your new topic on the subject with the one I started on Tuesday talking about the same thing.

I can't blame TCU for looking, but I don't see this happening. Why?

1) Strength. MWC is a stronger football conference, and an up-and-coming bball conference. Moving to the Big Least would be a step down in football competition across the board.

2) Travel. I know TCU has the "anywhere, anytime" mentality, but when you're talking about 2-4 hr plane trips for EVERY conference game, I think that gets to be a little much for the players/

3) Instability. TCU's been in what, 5 conferences since the mid-90's? You've got to wonder if the administration is getting tired of dealing with new competition every few years.

4) Really a part of #3, but I digress. Championships. TCU has become a contender in just about every sport (men's bball the outlier) for an MWC championship. That may not be the case in the Big Least, at least not in every sport like it is now.

Having said that, the AQ status for football probably outweighs all those other concerns. So, the question becomes, how does the MWC convince TCU to stay? and what do we do if they decide to leave?

GO POKES!

This story is definitely growing legs.

I tell you, Senator Hatch's inquiry panel is probably hiding their collective heads in whatever sand they can find.

Utah, BYU, TCU, and the rest of us all decried the system but...given the chance, we all seem to be more than willing to 'join em' rather than fight the system. There was so much self-righteous moaning on the MWC boards (mostly by Utah fans, after their BCS runs) about the unfairness of the BCS. I don't think I will ever take one of their fans serious again. If I had more time, I would like to go back and capture all the AD's, coaches, and presidents comments about 'working together towards a common goal' and 'conference unity'. What a bunch of blather.

When the porsche pulled up and the John flashed a Benjamin, the whores raced each other to get in.

I remember the NFL and MLB strikes, all of this crap is reminding me of how it felt when those episodes occurred. College sports was supposed to be somewhat legitimate. I know there was always a dirty side to it but this ridiculous business has really shown just how much of a business it really is. I suppose we will be having serious talk about paying players soon.

I tell you, all schools ought to have their non-profit status revoked. It is a fig leaf.

I'm not a fan of big government but an adult needs to step into the room on this mess. Most of these schools are public institutions and all receive public money for research. There is absolutely no question that athletics take a significant portion of funding away from academics (although there is massive waste there as well). My kid's tuition is through the frigging roof! Student loans have eclipsed credit card debt for the first time ever.

Maybe the networks should be the ones giving out all the grant money?
