Quietly, the College Football Playoff’s Group of 6 rep no longer needs to be a conference champ

The idea that the G6 spot could go to a non-champion has been previously unreported and, in some cases, even forgotten by CFP leaders.

G6 representative in CFP does not have to be a conference champion.

I guess this is a positive for G6 conferences moving forward in case there is G6 equivalent to Miami this year.
Not sure how likely that is for a G6 school.
Honest question, has there been a G6 school ranked higher than the highest ranked G6 school during the NY6 or CFP eras?

2011 Houston Cougars went 12-0 and then lost in CUSA championship game. Finished season as highest ranked G5 team I believe but didn’t matter because I don’t think any G5 team qualified for a BCS Bowl.
