Alright, I'll bite. Humor me here: Who was the last player from Wyoming to start on an FBS football team?WyoExpat said:Fullback41 said:Why not offer to a talented youngster with which you already have some ties? The potential reward far outweighs the risk of offering someone so young...
...unless, of course, that youngster happens to have played a game in Wyoming, then only offer if two or more higher-profile programs have already offered.
Already having ties to someone if those ties are based on growing up within the Wyoming Cowboys geographic fan base footprint are a disqualification in the eyes of many.

Thank you for helping me make my point. Wyoming isn't exactly crawling with D1 talent. We don't offer players from Wyoming often because they aren't good enough to play for us, and when they are we DO give them a scholarship. It just doesn't happen every year because frankly the talent level isn't high enough.BackHarlowRoad said:WYO1016 said:Alright, I'll bite. I'm confused by all of this. The offer was probably a political move to keep the Smith's happy so we don't lose yet another QB to a transfer.
And Clayton Kirven was the last player from Wyoming to start on an FBS football team. It was just a couple months ago...?
This attitude bugs the shit out of me.I heard other students say ALL THE TIME during the season "It kinda sucks that Smith is playing so well cuz now he's just going to leave." He is going nowhere. Just because one quarterback did it for reasons no one even really knows doesn't mean every player who comes in and has success is going to leave.I'm confused by all of this. The offer was probably a political move to keep the Smith's happy so we don't lose yet another QB to a transfer.

The article said although he is usually the youngest player on the field he is usually the most talented as well. I saw the staff appreciating how brett works and have reason to assume his little bro will progress accordingly and may be a big time stud in 3 yrs. Why not take a chance with an offer like that?
I don't get the doom and gloom, or conspiracy theories.
I saw it as uw trying to outrecruit others by being the first one on the table.

Neither do I. The kid is the starting QB on his high school team as a freshman. That says something about the kids ability.
Also, of all the QB's that transfered, only one was surprising (ASC). The others were all beat out by a younger guy or didn't see a chance to start for years
USC offered an 8th grade QB and they usually do pretty well in this department, so who knows. Basketball coaches do it all the time. Although it does look like a move to make sure we don't lose Brett.BackHarlowRoad said:wyopokesfan23 said:This attitude bugs the shit out of me.I heard other students say ALL THE TIME during the season "It kinda sucks that Smith is playing so well cuz now he's just going to leave." ONE quarterback did it? Of the top 4 QBs we've had on our rosters the last 3 years, 3 of them left. Pittser and Benjamin?
You honestly believe you can tell if a 9th grader can be a quality FBS athlete? C'mon. Even Lebron James's hype didn't start until 10th grade, haha. I'm not saying Brett is going anywhere or that it's even crossed his mind, I'm just saying Wyo saw a opportunity to further please their golden boy. As many possible reasons there could be to move elsewhere, knowing your younger brother will be taken care of when you leave is just another reason to bleed brown and gold.
