Joe Paterno's statue was removed at Penn State this morning.

And now the NCAA is going to hand out unprecedented sanctions against Penn State, specifically, Mark Emmert was given unilateral power to hand down punishment from the NCAA board of trustees. Will be announced tomorrow and they are going to be significant.

School may prefer death penalty: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/eye-on-college-football/19632027/ncaa-to-announce-unprecedented-penalties-against-penn-state-football

Wow....never heard that before.

Sounds like these penalties may be bad enough that PSU will gain Minnesota Gophers status for at least a decade.

I've tried to stay neutral on them, they're really hurting right now.....nobody would tolerate others pissing on the grave of a loved one. With that said, they need to stop releasing statements.

Me too... I feel bad for his family. I do. But they need to shut the fuck up. They seem to be confusing criminal liability with ethical failure. There will never be a criminal trial as to his failure to protect those children or his role as defacto accessory to their abuse. But you have to be a complete and utter idiot to not realize that he failed them, ethically. He held a football program in higher regard than the lives of children. I would not be surprised if his family was sued civilly, or at least attempted to be so.

The school should have started penalizing itself right away. Some other guys were talking and saying that the PSU players should be allowed to transfer out without penalty. Whatever the "full truth" and "complete truth" is that the Paterno family thinks should be learned may be more than they want. I'm glad the statue was taken down but that is nothing compared to what needs to be done. I'd still like to see PSU kicked out of the Big 10.

Looks like the Big 10 presidents are keeping the option alive to be able to boot Penn State from the conference. This raises an interesting thought process.

With the new playoff system taking hold for 2014, will this be the push necessary to finally get Notre Dame into the Big 10 for good? ND no longer gets the crazy benefits it worked out in the old BCS system, and being a part of one of the "Big 4" can only help their chances to make the playoffs. They'd also have to bring all their other sports with them to the Big 10, as I can't see the conference letting them in only for football.

Paterno was a POS.....a fake.....and his family needs to stay quiet....they just don't get it... and the koolaid drinkers to to open their eyes...sad how even after this came out....it was still all about penn state.....hopefully NCAA nails them. Too bad all of these people involved won't get the same shower treatment in prison... cause I am sure some guards wouldn't mind "slamming a locker".....makes me sick

.
:thumb: *and it isn't just joepa.....the feds need to nail the gov as well.....isn't just paterno and as he deserved to be nailed....he better not be the only one

Just saw people upset and crying about the statue coming down......shocking what people are saying.... nuke the damn koolaid factory...... want to puke :brick: :brick: :brick:

$60mm for charities around nation for child abuse
4 year post season ban
15 schollys for 4 years
immediately compete at new university for all PSU players
vacate all wins from 98 forward
5 years probation
reserve right to impose sanctions of individuals after criminal matter
NCAA will enforce some of Freeh report recomendations
independent athletics monitor within PSU for 5 years

They might be wishing for the death penalty now. And signing that consent decree means no changes. This is it. I like it… The penalties are good, and the rationalization is good.

Not a Penn State fan but I am good with everything that was handed down except having to vacate all of the wins from 98 forward. This is punishing kids who went out there and played every week win or lose and now they are being penalized for something that they were not part of.

I questioned that too. I think it is the result of speculation that had Paterno revealed the information he knew at the time he knew it, the football team would have been dramatically different, likely undergone some structural changes, and they may not have been as successful. It's at that time that Paterno determined the football team was more important than the victimized children, and that's when the cover-up began.

That makes SMU's penalty look like a slap on the wrist.

I said about the penalties "LMFAO." It's not enough. In an email conversation from Europe Alyssa said "Is that it?" and "I knew they would fail us all." And she always felt like Paterno was not the hero people treated him like. She said that years ago Penn State sent letters to competitive athletes for lab testing, something she was not interested in participating in. The letter had signatures on it, including Paterno's. She said that made her sick because she really didn't like him and would never do anything like that with his signature on it but still has the letter in storage. I wish everyone could have seen Paterno for who he really was and the others too.

I've been reading comments that say that it's worse than for SMU or that is better than for SMU. A one year death penalty would be easy to recover from for a school like Penn State. A school like SMU kept penalizing themselves by not trying to their fullest or making admissions very difficult up until maybe a couple of years ago after June Jones had the school make some changes.

I'm also reading a lot of comments from fans who act like their schools are clean when really they are big cheats. I read something about LSU being looked at for repeat violations and the school laughed at the NCAA.Then lawyers and (maybe politicians) delayed the investigation until the NCAA let it go or maybe was paid off.

I think the penalties were appropriate. Anymore than that, and you penalize people like students and faculty who had nothing to do with the cover-up or the abuse. The guys who did it are gone or dead. The culture of the university needs to be changed, and this will do that. They can't be lifted or lessened because of the consent decree, so this is what they have. And operating under a consent decree is no joke. They do it or they are penalized further. These are crippling sanctions... Not the death penalty, but fairly close.

I was talking about the link that Mr. T posted, as it would reduce PSU to a Div II school with a 100,000 seat stadium.
