Burman has definitely learned a PR lesson.
He realizes how badly he blew the Schroyer hiring, from a PR perspective. It was abundantly clear, even at the time, that he only wanted Schroyer. The search process was a sham, only to meet the basic paper requirements of a major hire.
So this time he's letting it get out that he's seriously considering the two top fan-favorite candidates: Billy Gillispie and Larry Shyatt. I think this is brilliant. Since Heath is gone early, he can now draw this out for a while. He can string out the fan favorite candidates, at least in the message board/blog/media hack world, while working the ones he's likely to get. Later on he'll let the realistic candidates start to bubble up, and then he can defend himself (and Buchanan) saying they went after the best possible coaches after the hire is finally made.
Seriously, guys: Can anyone really believe Gillispie and Shyatt are real candidates? The first one is going to get a job at the next Cincy, or a place like UNM, somewhere that can pay out 800k or more per year. The second one filed suit against the University of Wyoming, and has not been a serious candidate anywhere since blowing his shot at Clemson, the place that got him into that lawsuit. Neither of these guys are going to seriously be considered.
So, I say "Well done, Burman. You've learned a lot!"
