Burman Has Learned a Lesson

Burman has definitely learned a PR lesson.

He realizes how badly he blew the Schroyer hiring, from a PR perspective. It was abundantly clear, even at the time, that he only wanted Schroyer. The search process was a sham, only to meet the basic paper requirements of a major hire.

So this time he's letting it get out that he's seriously considering the two top fan-favorite candidates: Billy Gillispie and Larry Shyatt. I think this is brilliant. Since Heath is gone early, he can now draw this out for a while. He can string out the fan favorite candidates, at least in the message board/blog/media hack world, while working the ones he's likely to get. Later on he'll let the realistic candidates start to bubble up, and then he can defend himself (and Buchanan) saying they went after the best possible coaches after the hire is finally made.

Seriously, guys: Can anyone really believe Gillispie and Shyatt are real candidates? The first one is going to get a job at the next Cincy, or a place like UNM, somewhere that can pay out 800k or more per year. The second one filed suit against the University of Wyoming, and has not been a serious candidate anywhere since blowing his shot at Clemson, the place that got him into that lawsuit. Neither of these guys are going to seriously be considered.

So, I say "Well done, Burman. You've learned a lot!"

I don't know how much of it I attribute to Burman (I think the strategy outlined above could backfire, more on that later), but clearly you are right about the likelihood of either of those candidates coaching at UW.

The reason I think that all of this BCG, Shyatt talk could be detrimental to Burman is that it sets up expectations that he clearly won't be able to meet with the hire. By creating hope, it will create disappointment when the actual candidate (who may well be an excellent up and coming coach) is named. I don't think Burman would put himself in that position.

On the other hand, he can always say: "We simply were out-bid by the bigger guns. We did everything we could to make Billy happen." or "There was just too much history to make it work out with Larry."

Yes, I can believe it. I don't think it's very likely, but I can believe it. Gillispie is familiar with this part of the country, and after being out of the game for a little while may take a chance on a Wyoming. Of course, if he gets a better offer (like Texas Tech) then Wyoming will look like a paltry second prize. Could Burman make it happen? I think so. Will he want to, especially with Gillispie's baggage? I don't know.

Shyatt is a different animal all together. He had a good thing going here, and then chose to jump ship. There are a lot of people with looooong memories in Laramie, and I don't think bringing him back will do anything to appease an already distant fan base. In fact, I think it will turn a lot of people off. My other question is this: What the hell happened at Clemson? Wasn't that supposed to be a golden path to national championsips for him? If he couldn't get it done ther, are we willing to let him try again here? Again, possible? Yes. Likely? No.

Just my two cents. I think you're on to something with Burman letting us think he's pursuing the like of BCG and Shyatt, but more than likely going after Dooley or Cox. I'd be ok with either of them, as long as Burman doesn't let the big fish (BCG) get away, without even baiting the hook.

GO POKES!

Yes, I truly believe it. I think you are short changing Wyoming basketball because of the last 15 years or so. I don't know if you are familiar with the Sagarin/ESPN all-time rankings of college basketball programs that was released a few years back, but it bodes well for UW. For example:

UW - 63
UTEP - 109
Texas A&M - 111
Texas Tech - 89

Two of the schools Gillespie has already coached at are ranked below UW. Texas Tech, another job that many think Gillespie is interested in is ranked 25 spots below us. Do I think it's a done deal that Gillespie is coming to UW? No. Hell I'd only give it a 40% shot right now, but I definitely believe it is a possibility.

Unfortunately for us, that list is very fluid.

Jeremy Cox and the rest of the staff at South Florida are about to be fired. So we are going to fire someone and then hire a fired asst? LOL How dumb is that? :brick:

He was on Gillispie's staff before, so maybe he will be again.

Ya...they are not looking good (win / loss record). But look at who they have played...and how close some of those games were (including something like 10 top 25 teams).

I will say this...Cox would be a huge mistake, and cost Tom his job, IMO.
