Bring back the baseball program

Got 3-4 million bucks laying around? Half for baseball, half for women's programs.

While it would be fun, just doesn't seem realistic.

Plus you would only see Wyoming play at home for only the last half of the season due to all the fun weather the state gets.

Triple that figure at a minimum.

I was being very conservative. I suspect you are closer to the real number, but you could probably do a bare bones program for $1.5-2 million. Even that isn't cheap.

So North Dakota State can have a baseball program but we can't? Would beat the hell out of golf or women's soccer.

Women's soccer and Women's golf might be the most successful athletics' programs at the University right now.

Wyoming needs to add women's wrestling (the fastest growing collegiate sport). The extra costs are very minor because the facilities already exist.

yeah, and just get a failed male wrestler to "identify" as a woman and we'll be set to win titles.

Yeah but WG and WS are two sports nobody cares about. Bring back baseball and cut some of the fat off of some programs that are only in a state of existence because of compliance issues. Drop one and bring back baseball. NDSU has baseball and so should we. You want to talk with me about a program that would go over huge if we had a facility on campus? Build a 3,000 seat ice arena and watch people fighting each other for tickets with sell out crowds all year for Wyoming Cowboys hockey. Guaranteed.

This is nonsensical. We can’t drop a woman’s sport to bring another men’s sport. Title IX is federal law and the university cannot exist on its own without federal support including opportunities for federal loans for students and federal research grants.

D1 Hockey facility costs would be even more expensive than baseball. We can all come up with pie in the sky ideas of how cool it would be to watch D1 hockey and indoor baseball but absent the largest donations in university history, these cannot fiscally happen.

It would be awesome to have baseball and women's softball. If we were in the SEC we could afford it, too.

If we were in the SEC we'd be able to play the games. Look outside. The D1 baseball season started February 17 and ends May 27 (which is usually right around the time of our last major snow storm). There's a reason the team was shut down, and it wasn't the lack of talent. To play you need to be able to practice and play games, which is functionally impossible in the snow.

Prior to 1996, our culture was more "cowboy tough" as were the people of that generation. Can you imagine the baseball portal with some of these week assed kids?

Not trying to be pissy but how come they can do it and we can't?

No one is saying we can't do it, just that it is not realistic. And NDSU is a perfect example of the obstacles that UW would face.

Looking at NDSU schedule, their first game was February 17, they have played 27 games, their first home game (in Fargo, they hosted a series in Council Bluffs/Omaha) will be on April 18th. By that time, they will have played 34 games away from Fargo. They are only scheduled to play 13 home games out of their 52 total games.

Additionally, they currently have a record of 7-20.

Finally, NDSU (as an FCS team) has a smaller athletics budget than an FBS program would, so it may be less difficult for them to financially sustain a program.

These are some of the big issues we've talked about with UW having baseball: poor schedule, poor record, money constraints.
