...will he be a 4 year starter????
My money says HELL NO!!!!. In actuality he will be lucky to be a two year starter.
Let me esplane. After going back and watching the replay of games played, I believe that there is no more upside for this kid. There is a severe lack of arm strength and accuracy for a D1 quarterback. He has two pitches; a palm ball and a circle change-up. Because of this, the windows that he can throw into have to be really large. REALLY LARGE. Other than the wheel route that he hit Miller on against Bowling Green, he has a very small chance of hitting a receiver in stride on any pass over 10-12 yards.
Granted he can extend plays with his feet but he doesn't really make teams pay when he can because of his limited ability. With the improved line play how important of a skill is this now?? Six games played and a drop off in numbers and efficiency in every single one. I think that the coaching staff is saying the right things and showing confidence but it has to be false. An effective running game and receivers who can actually get separation have hidden this major flaw.
Is Pittser the fix???. According to some within the program it's a resounding YES! They had to give Smith the job to insure a decent start by beating Weber and Texas State. Mission accomplished. Bowling Green was gravy. Smith has to keep the job for the rest of the year but come spring ball....hmmmmm....not so much.
Imagine the Spread next year where there is just some slight separation by Herron and Pittser hits him in stride and it's 40 yard gain or a deep out by Doctson or Aiken and the ball is delivered on the money with proper D1 velocity. Pittser has enough athletic/running ability where there won't be much of a drop-off in that area either. Looking at the replays, Brett has been very, very fortunate with completing some of his deep balls. The further the season goes along he will be reduced to throwing slip screens.
He is becoming U-Dubs version of Tim Tebow. Seriously. I'm not hating on him or all over Pittsers jock but this offense has a chance to be extremely dangerous next year with the right guy. Smith's ceiling is just too low.
Just my humble opinion of course.....
Peace
