Brett Smith....

...will he be a 4 year starter????

My money says HELL NO!!!!. In actuality he will be lucky to be a two year starter.

Let me esplane. After going back and watching the replay of games played, I believe that there is no more upside for this kid. There is a severe lack of arm strength and accuracy for a D1 quarterback. He has two pitches; a palm ball and a circle change-up. Because of this, the windows that he can throw into have to be really large. REALLY LARGE. Other than the wheel route that he hit Miller on against Bowling Green, he has a very small chance of hitting a receiver in stride on any pass over 10-12 yards.

Granted he can extend plays with his feet but he doesn't really make teams pay when he can because of his limited ability. With the improved line play how important of a skill is this now?? Six games played and a drop off in numbers and efficiency in every single one. I think that the coaching staff is saying the right things and showing confidence but it has to be false. An effective running game and receivers who can actually get separation have hidden this major flaw.

Is Pittser the fix???. According to some within the program it's a resounding YES! They had to give Smith the job to insure a decent start by beating Weber and Texas State. Mission accomplished. Bowling Green was gravy. Smith has to keep the job for the rest of the year but come spring ball....hmmmmm....not so much.

Imagine the Spread next year where there is just some slight separation by Herron and Pittser hits him in stride and it's 40 yard gain or a deep out by Doctson or Aiken and the ball is delivered on the money with proper D1 velocity. Pittser has enough athletic/running ability where there won't be much of a drop-off in that area either. Looking at the replays, Brett has been very, very fortunate with completing some of his deep balls. The further the season goes along he will be reduced to throwing slip screens.

He is becoming U-Dubs version of Tim Tebow. Seriously. I'm not hating on him or all over Pittsers jock but this offense has a chance to be extremely dangerous next year with the right guy. Smith's ceiling is just too low.

Just my humble opinion of course.....

Peace

This has been discussed before. I agree, Smith does not have the arm that Pittser has, but we have not seen Pittser in game situations either. The reason Smith was chosen to be the starter was because he came in to UW early, worked his ass off on learning the play book, and went through spring practice with the team. Smith is cool and tough under pressure, sees the field well, and is a leader on the field. He has the respect of his teammates and coaches. He is a freshman but makes very few mistakes. I'm pretty sure the coaches will put the one in as the starter that gives us the best chance to win - their jobs and careers depends on it. Maybe they will switch to Pittser down the road - I think they are both good QBs that could play on a lot of teams. I'll take a Tebow type QB any day - all he did in college was win.

Sounds like crazy talk, but I don't think anyone was projecting ACS to not be "the guy" in 2011 back in 2009. It will be interesting to see if Smith has the same epic Sophomore collapse ACS had.

We had absolutely no one behind ACS.

I don't think JC is completely wrong with his analysis. He does leave out the chances of getting better. Smith has shown a desire and competitiveness at QB that could keep him at QB for 4 years. He makes it sound like Pittser will be getting better but Smith will just be chilling and remaining static. I don't see him slacking.

I do wonder about how he throws balls sometimes. I don't think I ever seen the air mails that he's thrown. We are talking 15ft over thrown on a crossing route.

Still. I"m a Brett Smith guy until Pittser does something. If Pittser was better, he would be playing. I don't see the coaching staff not playing him if he was. QB Smith has the enthusiasm and drive to keep him at QB for 4 years. He is very competitive, which I love. Seems like a great kid.

What positions need to be filled for next year? DE looks to be thin with both Biezuns and Knapton graduating. Maybe WR with a couple guys graduating as well. And maybe a DB with Gipson as well.

Wouldn't mind more size along the D-line too.

Always need 3 - 4 O Line and 3- 4 D line every year :)

DE
OT
WR
DB
4th QB
Punter

Going into Fall camp Depth chart showed:

5 starting seniors on D
4 starting seniors on O

Wasn't Pittser redshirted? If he has made significant gains and surpassed Smith we'd never know, no coach is going to pull the redshirt off a kid half-way through the season with his current starter doing well anyway.

Why are we even having this conversation? We have a kid that is playing his ass off and winning games. Who gives a shit what the other ones can do when he is getting the job done quite nicely. There is no QB controversy. Stop trying to stir one up.

My feelings exactly. Smith is the starter, working his ass off, and getting better every game.

+1

leading into the season i was an unapologetic pittser guy....but at this point even if he were performing better at practice i wouldn't want to see smith pulled.

shades of glenn anyone?

hahaha. is this what we talk about when we don't have a game? we're 4-2 why is this even being discussed right now? someone's kickin dust just to kick dust.

Unless either one of them can start on defense, it's a waste of time to be worrying about it. QB isn't the problem.

We gave up 63 points to a 2-5 WAC team. Don't really know what else to say.

The fix for what? Bad defense? Crappy kicking? I'm not sure Pitser could do anything that would change much so far. Remember Smith layed a deep ball right into the receivers hands against Nebraska and it got dropped.

As for the "according to some within the program" comment, if someone in the program actually is hinting or saying that publicly, they need a visit Burman and a reminder to STFU. Talk like that can do NOTHING but hurt the team.

Smith is the starter, and will be, as long as he wants the position.

I agree with other poster's as well...QB is not the issue with this team.

Just to repeat....our OFFENSE is not the problem...we will put 45 points up on these guys if the offense can get into a rythm and special teams doesn't put them on our own 3 every time.

Here is my prayer everynight before I go to bed:

"Dear Lord, please let Marty English have a good scheme for this game with a plan to stop Mr. Hillman. Please allow our defensive players to know what defense they are running, be in good position, and to run solid assignment football. Please allow our DC to get the calls into the players in plenty of time so that they are not looking at the sideline when Lindley is getting the snap. Please remind our players of what "Cowboy Tough" really means. That it isn't just two words, but the heart and soul of Cowboy Football. Also Lord, please take Coach Christensen's little notebook away so that he is not distracted from what is happening on the field. In Jesus name I pray...Amen."

Oh by the way...during MW Football media days way back in the summer, a fan asked Josh Bezuins what the team was doing/did during the summer to be "Cowboy Tough" this season. Bezuins responded....."uhhhh.....what was the question? Cowboy Tough? uhhhhhhhhh" I think I know why our Defense sucks. They have no culture there anymore. They have no pride in what our defense was like prior to the current regime.

I am a supporter of you DC....but you better get this defense to fricken get the job done or I and a lot of others like me will be calling for your head.

Well...sorta. Our defense was ok and they got the job done. Much Much Much better than USU but by no means have we arrived. Our defense got some help from their over-rated qb and sub-par receivers. I have to say, I am glad that my prayers were answered and we had a good scheme both offensively and defensively. It is clear that Marty English seems to be improving our D.

Now, I just hope it will continue in the cold weather against a much speedier team. I am proud of our Cowboys.
