Brett Smith is a tribute to our state and university

First, I want to say that I had a great time in Lincoln. I never heard a single, negative thing about Wyoming before or after the game. Nebraska's fans were pure class (with the exception of booing the personal foul call when they tackled Brett by the helmet, but in the heat of competition, I might have done the same thing).

But my real reason for posting is to relate how proud I am to have Brett Smith as a Cowboy. As I was leaving the stadium, I had a Nebraska fan come up and put a finger in my chest...and say, "Don't you ever bring that kid back here again. He was truly amazing and I don't want to be that frustrated again. I look forward to cheering for you all this year, because cheering for the team playing against you is maddening. Smith is the real deal and you deserve to win a lot of games."

Even more impressive was the fact that the comments didn't only tie to Smith. I heard several Husker fans note that Wyoming played with passion and heart. They noted that their Huskers would remember that game for a while, based on the bruises and soreness. I couldn't be more proud, as Nebraskans pride themselves on passion for football. They know it when they see it. And they saw it with our Pokes.

In an age where the likes of Johnny Manziel grab the headlines for being horrible role models and where kids can't expect much from them - I loved reading the story in the Omaha Herald where Brett, after a gut wrenching loss, gave his game towel to two kids in red. I love the notion that, while they will always be Husker fans first, those two boys and the thousands of Nebraskans that read that story and watched how hard our Pokes played, will be Cowboys too. That, my friends, is how you recruit for the future. That is how you convince parents in Nebraska, Texas, California and Casper, Wyoming, that Laramie is the place for their son.

DC has taken his fair share of knocks - from me and others. But I do have a sense that we might have something in terms of a program. I have to think that the AFA post-game debacle helped DC grow as a coach. I have to think that the Nevada ejection helped Brett grow. I have to hope that last season's meltdown instilled a hunger to win and play with passion. It sure looked like it on Saturday. This team appears to have taken the worst blows from last year and become better as a result of them. If so, we have a hell of a coach and a team with the character to overcome even the most glaring mismatch in terms of physical strength and ability (which seemed to be on full display on Saturday).

Here's to a great game against Idaho. I will be there cheering my butt off, enjoying being a very, very small part of something that I hope will be pretty special.

Go Pokes!

Brett was phenomenal on Saturday. The O-Line protection really didn't get all that much better, he was just impossible to stop regardless. Enjoy the hell out of this season Poke fans...Wyoming has its first QB that could very well leave after his Jr. year and get drafted in the 1st round. The nation is beginning to notice.

O-line protection really didn't get all that much better? We had a 100+ yard rusher, zero sacks, against a much larger defensive line. Frick J-Tool, is there anything positive you can say about the team? Christ all mighty.

I read that article. I am very disappointed that ESPN, CFN, Fox, or any of the other sports channels/reporters did not pick that article up. Great kid. Motivates our whole team and fan base. 2x the person and QB that Johnny douche bag is.

Yeah J-Rod, one-smooth-poke kinda has a point. The Oline was awesome. Not perfect by any means, but damn how can you say they weren't good?
Wick, Miller, and Smith combined for 220 yards on the ground.
And Smiths yards weren't all from broken plays. What about that huge 40+ yarder run. Designed run.
Wick dominated. Miller dominated.

And one-smooth-poke, no need to call him j-tool lol that's a little over the top.
Who cares if other poke fans are grumpy and don't see the bright spots? Makes it more fun for us optimistic ones when something good happens! Hahaha
Notice how many Wyo fans have had to "eat crow" because most Wyo fans thought we would get stomped?
FYI...I never had to eat crow.... ;)

I posted this on another thread...but in case people didn't see it

"Brett, you were a true warrior last night. But more importantly a class act. You gladly gave my son your qb towel after the game. Despite the heartbreak of a close loss. You shined more off the field than you did on it. Appreciated and respected here in Nebraska from a father who is a former nu kicker 86-90, but you are worshipped by a 12 year husker boy. Good luck the rest of way well be rooting 4 u. From the Bennett's in Nebraska (Evan 12yr #70)"

I have to disagree with you about the o-line. I re watched the game and just focused on the o-line and I was pretty impressed on how they blocked for the most part, I really liked how the Perez kid stays on his blocks while he is engaged. They did a really good job, they have improved a lot.

Football Experience of a Lifetime and random thoughts

Postby hickaggie » Yesterday, 9:54 pm

I feel like I hit the lottery this week-end football wise. Not only was I able to go the Utah/USU game I also ended up in Lincoln Saturday to watch the Cowboy/Husker Match-up. Although the teams I was cheering for both came up on the short end they were two of the best games I have ever attended in an incredible environment. I don't need to say much more about the Aggie game that hasn't been said but here are my observations about the second game.

1. Wow!!! Nebraska is a treat. If we could ever get a 2 for 1 like Wyoming did we should take it in a heartbeat. The nicest opposing fans around and being in the same room with 5 national championship trophies and three Heisman's was awesome. It was the first game in their renovated stadium and thus we were part of a the largest crowd in their history. They have something like 321 consecutive sellouts. It was not as over the top as Austin where I went last year but the Tradition just oozed through everything. College football at its finest.

2. Wyoming''s Offense is for real. Brett Smith is Chuckie Keeton's long lost white twin. He is a very good runner, accurate, savvy, has a great sense for avoiding rushers, and throws well on the run. Wyo's O-line was tremendous and I think their receivers are even a step up on ours. Smith accounted for over 400 yards passing, 4 TDs, nearly 100 yards rushing, and one stupid pick.

3. Wyoming outplayed Nebraska. Except for a dumb interception by Smith, a drive that included a lucky tipped pass heave and a dropped pick six by the Cowboys, an unneeded half-back pass call, and the refs deciding to suspiciously actually call holding (twice) on Wyoming's last drive after letting it go all game the Cowboys would have won. They easily outgained Nebraska and the Huskers had no answer for Smith.

4. After seeing both teams I believe that the winner of the USU-Wyoming game will be in the MWC championship and be the favorite to win it. Boise will drop a game to one or the other. I also believe that USU will be in a major dogfight with the cowboys but our depth at LB and on the D-Line will be the difference, but count out Smith at your peril.

5. The entire Nebraska fan section on the side of the stadium by Wyoming's tunnel stayed to give a long standing ovation to the Cowboys. The fans were very complimentary and admitted that Wyoming was the better team. We never heard a condescending thing from a Nebraska fan and they went out of their way to ensure we enjoyed every part of an incredible experience. What a week-end!!

I have a hard time believing that Smith will be ready for the NFL after this season, especially 1st round pick in the draft. Don't get me wrong, I think he's got the best chance of any Cowboy QB to be drafted early in recent memory (if not ever), but I think he's got to stick around for his senior season in order to see that happen. I remember Derrick Martin left early and he was only a 4th round pick, or something like that, if I remember correctly a lot of people thought he could be a 1st round pick, if he would've stayed for his senior season. Just my opinion, for what its worth.

Based upon the goal of him throwing the ball in 2 seconds or less, I think the O-line protection was great. I think he got a bit scrambly at times when he didn't have too, but I don't blame him after last years O-line play. He usually had plenty of time to make things happen in this spread offense.

Derrick was a 6th round pick. Would have loved to see him stay but it worked out as he played about 6 seasons in the league.

Martin is also the only Poke to ever declare early. If Brett doesn't get a first or second round grade, I doubt he leaves early. Not that type of kid. I assume he will want the chance to play in Oregon and complete his degree.

I'll say this for like the 100th time...Brett Smith is NOT leaving early for the NFL.
He is playing all 4 years. If he is a potential first round pick after this season, he will be the first overall pick next year.
If he is a potential 4th round pick this year, he will be a first or second round pick next season.

Pretty sure he is looking forward to playing in Oregon next season...

Guarantee it. He would probably like a shot at Oregon State as well. And another chance at Boise. Pretty much everyone who didn't think he was good enough.
But he did say in an interview that he used to play with a vengeance and wanted to prove other schools wrong, now he just love the state of Wyoming, the U of W, and his teammates, he plays to win now, not to make other schools regret their decision.

Which I think is good, definitely some growing up there. To me that shows that even the most mature of 18 year-olds still have some growing up to do.

Plus if he continues to win and can beat some big schools, they will regret it. Hell if Chip Kelly said he regrets not offering him, I think Smith has proven himself. Maybe not to the national media, but every D-Coordinator on the Wyoming schedule knows exactly who he is and what he will do.

Here's my take... I had a really fun time making the trek Friday night, stayed in North Platte and had fans at Wal Mart talking to me/us there and some a bit nervous.
Driving to Lincoln, stopping at SamsClub in Grand Island for fuel, fans in the parking lot talking with us. Cordial and not super cocky.
Then getting into Lincoln, stopped at Valentino's of course, all the fans in there were playfully fun, and even ran into some people we knew from Buffalo...lol
Went to the hotel after driving down O to the Stadium area, WHAT A SEA OF RED!!!
Tried to check into the hotel but the Pokes were staying there, Country Inn and Suites NE...so we couldn't until 7pm...so we found a shuttle bus that took us down the stadium and the fans were cordial down, then during our walk to the stadium.
Man was it like a Sauna, the one thing I didn't like is the one entrance 1 exit for the NE corner we were in, took forever, and forget about going to the bathroom, try telling that to my parents. LOL
During the game the fans around us (mostly Pokes fans) were friendly and nice, Man did I get nervous those last 3 minutes...
Overall a fun experience and glad i made the trek. The Pokes truly made me happy overall!!
Brett is a stud!!!!
