Bohl smacks DC..."we inherited that"

From his interview with the CST:

Question relates to the biggest thing that the Pokes need to improve on next year:

"I think the biggest area is speed on defense. We’ve got an imbalance on our squad with the number of scholarship offensive and defensive players. We inherited that. That also spills over into special teams. A lot of the long runs and big plays [Wyoming allowed], those things -- beyond some mental busts, which there were some -- but our speed and athleticism on defense has got to significantly improve. That also spilled over, when you see a couple punt returns for touchdowns in the last several games and then a kickoff return touchdown, those are indications of a lack of speed and athleticism in the secondary and with the linebackers.”

It is something that we all had in our mind and had probably mentioned, but it is actually good to hear Bohl say it out loud. It signals that he understands how to build a program with all sides of the outfit being addressed all the time.

I also loved the end of the interview with his demand that Vorel bold the words "MORE THAN EVER" when talking about whether he still thinks he will have success at UW. Great stuff.

Agreed. Glad to hear the coach admit there is a talent issue. Can't solve the problem if you don't acknowledge it. It's been an issue for years.

You see it as calling DC out.

I see it as blaming DC and throwing the current players under the bus.

"The last staff left me with slow shitty players".

Is he wrong? No.

Does it mean you publicly do it? Hell no!

If DC did this people would be all up in arms about DC throwing players under the bus and not coaching them up and putting them in the right spots.

It was painfully obvious that we lacked depth and speed because our special teams sucked so bad all year, even before the injuries. Special teams is the best indicator of depth, hopefully we can build some.

I get your point, but I read the "we inherited that" as referring to the imbalance between offensive and defensive players...meaning only that with a better balance we'd have more defensive players to choose from to stock our special teams, and more depth in the face of injuries, not a special knock on the players we do have.

Correct.

I was just about to post this very same thing. His quote certainly did raise the issue of speed and athleticism in current players. However, it was couched in the lack of balance in schollies that had been given on offense and defense to suggest that DC never invested in defense properly...thus the lack of depth and competition in the defensive two deep...made even more glaring with injuries.

Why do you guys think teams like Wazzu, Texas Tech, etc are constantly terrible on defense.. horrible imbalance issues between offense and defense.. then the DC gets fired, and they start all over, but really, the trouble is in the recruiting.

Under DC at this point in the year did we have this many verbals usually? And of what caliber were they? I've never really followed recruiting closely before this year.

We have more early commits than during the DC era but it remains to be seen if the class will be any better. I don't think DC really tried to get early commits and wanted to wait till the offseason to get them. I like most of the recruits we are getting now and have faith in the staff but the fact that we have more early commits doesn't really equate to having bett recruits IMO.

The guys under Vic didn't take the "Worst team I've been associated with...." all that well :twocents:

Well, when you barely eek out a win or 2 a season, kind of hard not too. Nothing personal, but it is what it is.

TRUE

But this was in his first year I believe.

Reinforcing previous point as in "it may be true but be careful how you say it" type thing.
