English? Really? - Marty English will enter his ninth season at the University of Wyoming in 2011. He is the senior member of the Cowboy coaching staff. For the third consecutive season, English will serve as the Cowboys' defensive coordinator. He will be coaching the UW linebackers for the ninth straight season. I think English was given plenty opportunity to turn the defense of the program around.

Well, it is obvious to me your theory has a few holes in it. Marty English was only the D Coordinator for 3 years. And year 2, he was forced to switch from a 3 - 4 to a 4 - 3, he was drastically micro-managed, and not only had to convert players to play out of position, but also lost players to the other side of the ball. As far as Marty English the LB coach, we (UW) had solid LB's and LB play the second he stepped into Laramie...bad argument there!

Was he the right guy for UW, for Dave Christensen, probably not. Further though, according to your 5 year plan, we will never know. But this defense of Tormey, who took a bad defense, and made it MUCH worse, is hilarious.

;)

It doesn't matter how long he was the D coordinator there are no holes in anything, If in 9 years at a school and 5-6 of them you are working with LB's and the defense when you take over you can't make a proper scheme or make a D that does shit you don't deserve anymore time.

In the time he spent coaching linebackers he should have already had a game plan for when/if he became the D coordinator. Jason Garrett is a perfect example. He worked his ass off at something with the Head Coach job in mind the entire time so when he took it over he was prepared.

Has he coached the Cowboys bad? not really there have been some bad breaks and he had some shitty clock management issues sure but overall a solid coach. You can argue that English deserved more time all you want but after all that time working with LB's he wasn't ready to be a D coordinator and imo it showed in his schemes and our defense and I don't think he was prepared or cared enough to be prepared.

I'm not saying Tormey is either but he has only been here a year and let's be honest this defense isn't exactly amazing. I don't want to sit here rooting ona 1-2-3 and 7 team either but unless we have a solid perfect defensive coordinator that is going to be hired I don't care to play the new D every year shit.

We have some serious, serious problems on defense - as everyone who has watched the Cowboys can easily see. I'm wondering what is the skill/talent level of the 18 players on red shirt this year, and how many of them will be able to help the defense next year. I don't think it is strictly a speed issue with the secondary & linebackers this year, so what is it? Are they out of position, are they confused on the coverages & assignments, are the coaches calling the wrong coverages - if it is, then I call it a coaching problem. We have been playing soft (10 to 15 yards) off the receivers for several years & we are (and have been) afraid to blitz because we are afraid we will get burned by leaving receivers open. We can't get any pressure on any QB, so he has time to sit in the backfield and wait for a receiver to get open - which puts even more pressure on our secondary/linebackers and tires them out especially at the end of games. How much confidence does our secondary/linebackers have when the coaches are basically telling them they aren't good enough to play man one-on-one defense. This defense has steadily gotten worse & worse over the last several years. We are making very poor offenses look really good. Something needs to change immediately.

I agree 100% something has to happen and it has to happen very soon. What does that mean? Fire the entire coaching staff? Fire a 1st year D coordinator? Fire the HC? I don't see anything like that happening. I see us stuck for 1-2 more years of this seesaw bullshit. Do I trust that things will change? Not really they haven't since 09 we just never realized how lucky we were because we thought it was all talent and we were good.

Now that everyone Wyoming related understands we were 80% lucky and 20% good were all pissed off about it and were seeing it all season long this year. Why didn't we see it in 10'? I'm not sure there were no real excuses in 2010 for that 3-9 record other than we lost the close games and didn't create any TO's.

I'm just glad BB is here I dunno what to think about FB and am glad that I don't have to think about it until next season.

Micro managed? He was the D-coord. Do you know what the D-coord does? English has to listen to what is told and expected of him by his head coach. English however is in charge to get that point across to both positions coaches and players. English could not do that.
The D- coord is like your local Wal-Mart store manager, he has to listen to the CEO's and general managers about how to make the store run. Then he has to get that point across to his shift managers and his area managers, who then have to do the same to regular staff.
This defense this year is truly rebuilding, we have not only a new D-coord but we had a few switch up and changes at positions coaches. On top of that we had a young, inexperienced D who got bit by injury this year and made them even younger and more inexperienced.

I'm not judging Tormey until next year. A lot of our most skilled d players have been under a different system for 3 of their 4 year careers. I don't get how tormey doesn't get more than one season while the O gets several years of "we don't have the the personnel to run our scheme". We better see improvement next year or ill be upset. We don't need to be the best but much better. An average d and we'd have many more wins.
