WORLAND — The Worland Warriors have a tough opening round game of the 4A playoffs this season. Their opponent…the powerhouse Buffalo Bison. Buffalo manhandled Worland during the season by dismantling the Warriors defense en route to a 40-6 win.
The Warriors will be looking to bounce back with ferocious tenacity in this first round skirmish. Worland ended the season with a 4-4 record, and held their opponents to an average of 12.5 points per game. Buffalo constituted 40 percent of the points the Warrior defense gave up on the whole season.
Worland’s defense will have to put the handcuffs on the potent offense of Buffalo in order to face off against the winner of the Cody/Torrington Game. The game will be in Buffalo, Friday night, at 6 p.m.
The Burlington Huskies go into the 1A tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Huskies opened the season with a loss to Rocky Mountain 14-6. That would be the last time that Burlington would endure the bitter taste of defeat. They would go on to win the rest of the games during the season for a 7-1 record.
The offense of the Huskies amassed 193 points during the season, but their defense was even more impressive. Shutting out half the opponents they faced, the Husky defense allowed a miniscule 3.8 points per game.
That defense will be the focal point for Burlington as they go up against the Normative Services Wolves. With a 1-6 record, the Wolves will have all they can handle against the Huskies in the first round. The game will start at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon in Burlington.
The Greybull Buffs will be going into the playoffs to face the Big Horn Rams on an early Thursday game at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs put together a 4-4 record during the season, and look to knock off the Rams in the first 2A game of the postseason.
Big Horn and Greybull met in the sixth week of the season where the Rams came out victorious with a 24-6 win. The Buffs held the Rams to only 24 points, 9.5 points less than their average score during the season of 33.5. Greybull will look to their offense to manufacture more points against a defense that kept them in single digits in their first meeting.
The Riverside Rebels will also be taking a 4-4 record into the playoffs. They will look to an offense that put up 35 points against Greybull, to keep the score high enough to collect a win against Niobrara County in Lusk at 7 p.m. Friday night.
The Rebels have not faced the Niobrara County Tigers this season, and will need to put together a strong game plan, as they will be facing a Tigers team that went 7-1 and outscored their opponents during the season a whopping 242-102. The Tigers gave up 34 of those 102 points in the final game of the season, and also had two shutouts during the season.
As postseason high school football starts this weekend, each of these four teams will play for one more weekend of hard hitting football.
