Best QB in Wyoming history

Welniak. Guy was a stud. Had he had 3 or more years at QB, he probably would have been the record holder for most yards through the air.

Hmm, good question. I think Welniak is certainly in the running. Probably also Walwork, Hughs,....who else. Need some nominations.

as far as nominations...bramlet 1 and bramlet 2

Joe Mastrogiovanni. Was in top ten in some national stats. Was also the FG kicker. Was first throwing QB at Wyo. Sometime entered game on the defensive team. Also played on baseball team and for a while the swimming team. Was exciting to watch. Being from metro New York, was also a fine pool player. And the name. How could you not like the name?

Still I like Walwork and Welniak. Corontzos (spelling) during Roaches reign was also pretty good. Joe mastro was definately a good one and lead WYO to quite a few wins.
If this was based on sheer class and not stats it would be Karsten Sween hands down. I always felt bad that he didn't get to finish his career on a good note.

in the end I'm going with Walwork. He just new how to get it done. He was always able to get the ball in the right spot, near every time.

What is not defined in the question is "best". I interpret it to be in the context of of the era in which the QB played. So it all relates to his peers and the impact he had on the team. Was Johnny "Tarzan" Weissmuller, the Olympic champion and record holder of the 20's a great swimmer? Yes. In his time. But his times would barely qualify him to enter the 2011 Wyoming state swimming meet. And at 500yds he wouldn't even make it to the girl's finals.

Welniak wasn't even the best QB on team. He played because of an injury. Geez. The game plan made him what he was. He didn't make team what it was.

I think in my top four, no order, I'd have to say Wallwork, Hughes, Corozontos (right?), Casey Bramlet.

Corontozos has to probably be the slowest running QB in the history of Wyoming football. Good passer though.

This will show my age, but Phil Davis was a helluva wishbone QB. In '79 he threw for like 1680 yards and ran for 630.

I think Paul Toscano needs a mention here. He only played QB for one year, having been a defensive back his first three years at UW. But, going into the 1967 season, HC Lloyd Eaton had him switch to the QB position because he didn't think his younger guys were ready. Paul not only took up the position, but led Wyoming to a 10-0 record and a berth in the Sugar Bowl. At the end of the year, Wyoming was ranked number 5 in the nation, the highest ranking the Pokes have ever achieved before or since. All those other guys mentioned were great, no doubt, but they never took Wyoming to the heights that Paul did. Just saying.

one question is, were casey's phenomenal career passing numbers because of his greatness alone or subsidized by malcom flloyd?

One interesting note, Ryan McGuffey and Malcolm Floyd played together all 4 years and McGuffey had slightly better numbers.

from the Wyoming athletics Hall of Fame...

Edward "Eddie" Talboom
Football, 1948-50

Eddie Talboom transferred from Notre Dame in order to run Coach Bowden Wyatt's single wing offense as a tieback and kicker. The offense was a perfect fit for the athletic Talboom, who led Wyoming to a 9-1 record and first ever Skyline Conference title in 1949. Talboom engineered Wyoming's 10-0 1950 season and was named the Most Valuable Player in the 1951 Gator Bowl. He became Wyoming's first Cowboy All-American in football. Talboom set 13 Cowboy scoring records, including 303 career points and single game mark of 29 in a 103-0 rout of Colorado State College in 1949. He was also the first Cowboy to pass for 1,000 yards in a single season. After his career, Talboom was the greatest scorer in NCAA history and still ranks among the highest scoring football player ever.
