Ben Durbin - Playing for a winner!

Iowa State 3 & 0. Good move Ben, at least you are playing on a winning team. Even though you are a 3rd string DT now, and have played in all 3 games, recording no tackles, no sacks, no assists, nothing.

Made me wonder. If he was our starting DE out of the spring, and he basically rides the pine at the mighty Iowa State now as an undersized DT, were my expectations of our defense a little bit jaded? LMFAO.

I was once told by a former UW DB coach (1986, 87, 88, 89, ...), how great his job was working under Erickson & Roach...that all he had to do was to keep the other team under 40. Maybe that is the angle Tormey is working.

Side note: Maybe Ben saw this coming, and it made his "decision" easier. Not sure I can blame him now (like I did then).

Ouch.

to have a seasoned player on the d-end at least to rotate in. I think the d-end position is one of our real blindspots this year. Any run to the outside pretty much is a given for a big gain.

Then shouldn't we have the ends crashing down with backers keeping contain?????

If you want to see a classic example of where things are wrong on defense go to espn.com and go to the wyoming Idaho game. Once you go to the wyoming Idaho game go to the videos and find the video that says James Baker rush for 29 yards to the wyoming 2 yard line.

http://espn.go.com/ncf/video?gameId=322660070" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and pause it throughout the play and watch the d-end and linebackers. The entire right side is wide open and it's up to a safety to make a play on a running back running full steam.

To me the begining allignment was messed up, it looked like a goal line stand we were all squished up leaving the sides wide open.

Like Pearson from AF on his bootleg TD. DE was in lala land.

I would assume he isn't playing much.http://www.cfbstats.com/2012/player/311/1019481/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

He's doing just fine for ia state..

:D

If I could applaud I would.

He has a degree from UW
He decided to go play for his favorite team growing up
He is actually playing
They are 4-2
We are 1-5

I dont get why you're making fun of him for leaving?

Plus he will get to a Bowl Game and we won't and even if we did his would still be a better Bowl game. I give him the same props I give Gary hated to see either of them leave wish them the best success playing where they are happy!

exactly

I don't really pay attention to players not in the program but wish them success. However, I think there is a fairly big difference between a graduate transfer and an undergraduate transfer (typically, Russell Wilson notwithstanding).

We all know Durbin isn't going to the NFL. From a career perspective it makes sense to obtain a degree from the local area where you plan to live and work. Durbin is from Iowa and if he plans to work in Iowa, it is easier to discuss Iowa State and connect with potential employers (versus Wyoming). Fans like to think of things from purely a sports perspective, but lets remember the wide majority of players will not be playing professional football.

Gary's situation is different. I think he chose his transferring school from mostly a football perspective. He was an honorable mention freshman all-american and a player that other schools had initially overlooked. He has borderline NFL potential and no doubt stands a greater chance of gaining interest in a Big 12 program. (Note: he still would have received NFL interest had he stayed).

To keep good players in the program, I think we need to build depth to the point where we aren't starting so many freshman. I highly doubt that Gary and ACS would have transferred had they redshirted at Wyoming as they would have lost a year of playing eligibility in transferring.

I'm pretty sure the reason Gary left was because of a girl back in Oklahama. Those were the rumors when it happened.

I heard it was because of his mothers health.
That's why he didn't have to red-shirt. Although he DID red shirt it wasn't because he had to. he is jr this year and will play next year also.
He had a "family emergeny transfer" or something like that

You make some good points. But...

Why is it that a certain portion of our fan base is such well-wishers when it comes to athletes leaving our program(s)? I don't get it. Is it a generation / age thing? Is it because some of our fanbase are just real nice people...you know...the aw-golly-shucks types?

Point being...they quit. And almost in every instance, for selfish reasons. I say...fuck 'em. I don't wish them harm, but I sure don't wish them well either.

I'm not sure that I have seen many of our fanbase hoping that our transferring players will be world-beaters for their new team. However, I don't think many of the transferring players have publicly trashed our program (other than tcu's future receiver).

People make selfish decisions in life all the time, it is a fact of life! If you get an offer for higher pay at a prestgious company are you going to at least consider their offer (even if you really like the people you currently work with)? I would say that the vast majority of people would jump at the career opportunity. That doesn't make them bad people. It is just a business/career decision.
