BCS dead, 4 team playoff in 2014

Four team playoff was approved by the presidents today. Looks like it's gonna be decided by a committee of 15 people. 6 BCS bowls. Thoughts?

Its a start...but this new system still creates a tougher route for what was formerly known as "non-AQs". The finish line was pushed further back.

Went 12-0 in a non-major conference? Awesome!!! Have fun in the San Diego Credit Union Bowl. Unless you've qualified for the 4-team playoff (likely 2 SEC vs. 2 PAC/B10/BXII), the bowl games will be decided on how well you travel more than your overall record.

It's nice the BCS is going away but let's be Honest a 4 team play off will always include ACC, Big 12, Big 10, Pac 12 and SEC. Unfortunately mid major schools will never see their way into that 4 play off system so while I am happy that the big money schools can play it out on the field I'm disappointed that it will have the same BCS conferences.

+1 Exactly. The window of opportunity just got smaller. At least we were hypothetically told that if 12-0 happened, there was a remote chance to go BCS bowling/national championship berth. Now? Not a chance....the scary thing is, even the more prestigious bowls are off limits....strictly for teams that travel very well and pay up. I was only sort of kidding when I said that a non-AQ team (or whatever we're called now) goes 12-0, you're still headed for Vegas.

This is no different as far as a national championship goes for the non BCS schools. It's not like they would have ever let one of us into the championship under the old system. They probably won't let us in this system either. Don't know how everyone thinks this is worse for the non AQ's. It's the same. Maybe with 4 teams, they might give a chance to non-AQ School to play their way into a championship. I actually see it as maybe even better for mid majors. They would never let one of us in under old system without beating some big boys late. Period. Now I believe public pressure and an undefeated mid major team that is ranked in the top 4 could be given a chance to prove themselves. In the old system, there was no way they could risk giving them that chance in the NC.

So, with the Big East essentially excluded from the "Big Boy" table, and Boise having not officially withdrawn from the MWC yet, do they say screw paying to fly all the private California schools of the Big West around for the Olympic sports, and stick with the MWC? I've sure Thompson would have no problem writing that $5 mil check to the Big East. As for SDSU, they can keep them. ;)

TBH I would be very surprised if SDSU and BSU tried to back out of that deal because they are in no better shape in the Big East. But while not being in any better shape they will see much more lucrative TV deal so is it worth spending the majority of the TV deal on travel every week?

Who knows I wouldn't be surprised to see a mid major system come into play sooner or later. I mean I know it sounds far fetched and far off but FBS exists for a reason. I would watch Wyoming regardless where they were but I wouldn't be completely against seeing a new system form out of this that pit all the mid major schools against each other with their own play off system at the end of the season.

To me something like that while might not be as big money wise it sure would be better for not just Wyoming but the other 80+ teams that are getting shit on every year by not being in a big market area.

This. And its not all that far-fetched. We're not gonna want to spend the rest of footballs history playing in these weak bowl games that prelude the big ones.

Which one sounds better to you?

The pinnacle of Wyoming football is the Las Vegas Bowl (New System)

The pinnacle of Wyoming football is a national championship (Mid-Major Playoff)

Bottom line: Wyoming will never be one of the "big boys"....so why play this charade?

This is just a "new way to avoid the anti-trust suits and maintain the good ole boys revenue stream."

It's no longer the BCS, it's just pure BS.

Questions remain on revenue distribution, the "major" bowls involved outside the semi-final sites and the committee members. Revenue distribution will have an effect on how much the new bowls (and new deals) will be worth to participating teams. No way this four team playoff is around longer than 12 years.

I'm optimistic today that a deserving team (and its conference) outside the top four that happens to have a smaller budget could potentially reap a lot more. But I'm also pragmatic and understand that conferences that can afford it, like the Champions Bowl can just make their own deals and essentially pay themselves even more. And other conferences can't right now.

Finishing undefeated or with one loss and going to a bowl that will pay in the eight figures could potentially stave off a lawsuit.

Boise and San Diego State are gone in my opinion. Maybe if the waiver had been granted, but the TV contract alone will make them drop trou and present to whomever they feel will expose them the most. Whorish is the norm these days. I don't blame them, just kind of repellent to me.

Tourney for the also-rans!......come on! Almost sounds like the skunk ape killer!......just make it a mtn west... conf USA..sun belt.....Mac...tourney! That would actually be pretty sweet

(a) So we will have FBS playoffs (sec, big 10, pac 12....), FCS playoffs (mwc, conf usa, mac....), and FDS playoffs (caa, big sky, socon....)?

(b) or we can have the skunkapekiller manifesto 2.0?
