Battle of the Hype Machines

Just a general curiosity from a guy who hasn't been in Wyoming all that long. Josh Allen's obviously got the social media generation level of hype that is pretty unprecedented for the program, but it got me wondering...

Whose hype do you think was bigger entering a season? Josh Allen? or Marcus Harris?

I wasn't around for the Harris years and only know of the campaigns tangentially. Any Poke lifers got an opinion?

If you are talking NFL hype it is Josh Allen that is more hyped than Marcus Harris. Not even close either. Harris was never projected as a top 20 pick let alone top 3. He actually was never even projected to go in the top 2 rounds of the NFL draft. He ended up being taken in the 7th round.

Harris was a great college receiver but it didn't translate to the NFL as much.

I saw another good one on Twitter that is Josh Allen compared to Fennis Dembo, which actually seems a little closer in scale. Seems that Allen is pretty unique among Wyoming football players that get hyped to this degree...

I would say that is a much much better comparison. Josh is the most hyped Wyoming player since Dembo. Fennis was on the cover of Sports Illustrated pre-season basketball issue and Wyoming was ranked #4 in the country pre-season in SI that year if I remember correctly.

The basketball team as a whole that year was way more hyped than this football team and the basketball team as a whole with Dembo leading it is a far better comparison to Josh Allens hype this year.

87-88 season correct? Preseason was 10th. Nothing to scoff over but not quite 4

Yeah you are correct. They actually got up to #4 that year in the AP poll. That is what I was thinking of just got confused. They were #4 the week they went on the road to Utep and New Mexico and finally got beat.

I would say thinking about it Josh from a pro perspective is probably just a little more hyped than Dembo was but from a college perspective Dembo was more hyped. Dembo was actually on people's 1st and 2nd team all americans lists where Josh isn't but on the other hand Josh is projected to go top 3 in the draft and Dembo was more of a top 15 to top 20 projected guy.

Good comparison though. Way better than any other comparison you could make thinking about it for Wyoming athletes.

I think Alan would get even more hype if he wasn't boss eyed and weird looking. He's lucky in that he's coming out in a year dominated by quarterbacks like Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold, who look like they have extra chromosomes.

BEST YEAR EVER!!! A great basketball team. A second straight WAC Championship in football. Embarrassing BYU on National T.V. in one of the very first ESPN Thursday Night College Football games!!!!! And oh...yeah...best football uniforms at the University of Wyoming ever!!!! :D

  I almost damn near spit my coffee out! I'm probably going to the the Wyokie of 1995 with our WAC championship appearance and 2000-2001 with out great Bball team! Given that I was 2 in 1988 and my Wyoming athletic success is limited haha!

I will 2nd all this although Benny's team after Eric, Fennis and crew graduated, Reggie Slater's team was good and fun to watch. I started myself in 1988, and my 1st true full game was that night game against BYU, rode my bike to my Biology lab, once that teachers aid released us the rest is truly a blur but man it was fun, what a night game...88 truly a great year and oh so fun of memories just getting drunk at the games and the scores averaged around 50 per game, fun times, fun memories...I do remember the Marcus Harris years and there wasn't nearly the hype as JA is garnering but we didnt' have social media back then internet was just a thought and still a few years off as well. God am I getting that old, lol

That would have been great to be a UW during those years or at least remember them. I was at UW during the Joe Glenn and he who shall not be named (bball) years so not too exciting although some great wins at home with Joe. The Marcus Bailey, Josh Davis, Ugo and Uche years were probably the best times I've had. Blaring Cotton Eye'd Joe in the AA with standing room only again Utah was pretty damn cool.

We can only hope that our team is as successful as those late 80's teams.

I think our athletics program is poised for that. 2017/2018 should be solid with football and basketball programs ready to finish top 4 in both sports. Both programs are still very young yet they still have a pretty good chance to win the league.

2018/2019, we have a good chance to win titles in both sports, if not be favorites to win titles in both sports.

I think the late 80's heyday is right around the corner if it's not here already.
