But I hate the idea of contriving rivalries based on exactly zero history between the teams. Isn’t a rivalry supposed to be based on history?

I agree with you on the basing thing. We have the Powder River Basin, Big Horn Basin, Wind River Basin, Green River Basin and DJ Basin that all produce significant amounts of oil and gas. Which one is it!?!?
