If a girl was talented enough to play soccer and basketball she'd have to be sholorahiped at soccer because they have 25 or whatever and bball has 13
Except women's basketball has 15 scholarships and soccer only has 14...
But good effort

I knew there may not be 20+ full scholorships for soccer but surprised it's only 14. Why on earth would they allow women's bball to have 15?

Basketball is full scholarships, I don't believe soccer is and they are split up however they want, i.e. half scholarships for some players, full for others

This.

Basketball is a head count sport (as are football, volleyball, women's tennis and women's gymnastics). This means that all scholarships are full, no partials allowed. All other sports can mix their scholarships up however they want (10%, 50%, 100%, etc.).

Are those the only 5 that are head count? 6 I guess if you count mens and womens basketball

To the best of my knowledge, yes, those are the only ones. Yes, 6 with Men and Women BBall.

This makes things interesting when you work with a non-head count sport. For example, Division I Men's Lacrosse can only have a max of 12.6 scholarships for the team. However, in order to field a competitive team, you need at LEAST 25 players, but most teams have 40+. As a result, you have very, very few individuals that are given full scholarships. Most of your really good players are getting around 50%, if not less.

I would say that it is highly unlikely Conway plays both sports...the demands to do that are unreal. Conway's statements lead me to believe this as well.

If I had to guess, I would guess that Conway does not play basketball next year and we will have another open scholly. I think we have to see what is out there as far as graduate transfers (maybe land two?).

I hope he sticks with hoops. The team needs guard help so bad and they need him up to MWC snuff next year fast. He could be one of those athletes that could pull off both. Remember Charlie Ward was a badass at both those sports. Donavan Mcnabb did it too. Both QB's though which is different but also both guards. So lets not totally rule it out but yeah doubtful. Key is he couldn't get hurt before the hoops season. WR's get banged up sometimes, especially if they go across the middle a lot. Don't know how the football guys think about all of this. Have to go to the other side of the board for that biz.

Thanks for the explanation. So a two-sport athlete always has to count against the sport with the most scholarships. Makes sense, I guess.

Also, Women's Basketball probably has 15 scholarships because that how it was for both MBB and WBB back in the day before they cut the maximum to 13 for men's basketball.

I would guess that most lacrosse players aren't destitute, so they can pay their own way wherever they can get a shot to play anyway.

On one hand, I agree, I was using Lacrosse as an example, there are certainly other sports (soccer!) that tend to have athletes from less-privileged backgrounds.

On the other hand, there are a ton of people that play Lacrosse on the east coast, and not all of them are rich. Johns Hopkins is one of the best lax programs year in and year out, and the cost of tuition for 1 year there is $48,710! So for a middle-class player from Philly or Baltimore that only gets a 50% scholarship, they are still going to have to come up with almost $25,000/year to play. I'm sure they'd much rather have that full ride.

So if the coaches agree that he can play both sports, can we put him on scholarship for football and recruit another basketball player with his freed up basketball scholarship?

This could really help Wyoming basketball if we get another free scholarship to fill.

Based on what we have learned in this threat, this is exactly what might happen (if Coach Edwards finds the guy he wants to use the scholarship on.)

I can't see why Bohl would agree to put him on scholly. He can use him as he wants without having to burn a much needed scholarship. I'd be shocked to see him give one to Conway

How many football players do we have that had offers from CU, Nebraska.....Any? Besides, Allen Edwards has the power. He's committed to basketball. That would be my deal if I we're Edwards. Yes, he can play both, but you guys have to pay his schollie.

I think were speaking the same thing..... There is no doubt that he is a high enough rated recruit to justify it, I just am not sure why Bohl would burn a scholly on someone who is already on scholly.... And I DEFINITELY don't see Edwards pulling the the basketball scholly

In terms of the scholarship, it's not up to the coaches. It is governed by NCAA regulations (http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/tam/genrel/auto_pdf/comp101-4-multi-sport-sas.pdf). If he competes in both and recieves a scholarship, I believe it has to count towards football as per NCAA requirements.

Having said that, I think both coaches will ultimately make him pick one. Too much overlap between the seasons to be successful in both.

I had no idea this rule was in place. Great find. That makes it REALLY easy if he chooses to pursue football

Possibly a selfish perspective on my part since I'm definitely a basketball homer, but I hope he picks one sport or the other and sticks with it. I've seen too many basketball seasons lost because of football injuries in high school, so I'm definitely not a fan of the football/basketball dual player. That said, if he does go that route i'll still be ecstatic to have him on both teams. Mainly just a sore spot for me because there are two instances in my mind at our local high school, where championship caliber basketball teams were derailed because of ACL injuries during football season costing a couple of the most critical basketball players their entire basketball seasons. It got to where the best player quit playing football to make sure he was healthy for basketball. Granted this is also coming from a little podunk high school that gets shellacked year after year in football but often is competitive in basketball, so the risk of getting injured for a lost football season vs competing for a championship in basketball is probably not worth it, hence why said player quit playing football to stay healthy for basketball.
Obviously NCAA is a different environment, and as I said before, I'll pull hard for Conway no matter what sport/sports he plays.

I think he can do it if he's a specialist like KR/PR or one special play type guy. I just can't see him being a full timer and learning everything he needs to do both. Maybe I'm wrong
