This really hasn't helped crowds historically - Most recently, Fresno last year. Plus, they're late in the year, which kills crowds. IE, TCU in what, 2011? There isn't a home game left we can't win. Which is fun to say!
But is TV/weather why fans aren't coming out, or is it the fact that we haven't been as competitive late in the season?

I think it's all of the above.

Agree...many factors

Weather
TV
Opponent - Competition
Historically shitting the bed

Not much we can do about mother nature, but the other 3 certainly are fixable. I still am all for a TV blackout in Laramie, Cheyenne, and the surrounding areas - unless the game is sold out. But I am probably in the minority.

On a side note, maybe a different topic altogether - but if bWHYu were to come to Laramie in September, does anyone here think that it woudln't sell out the War?
I don't think BYU has ever sold out the War. BSU doesn't, why would BYU?

Could be wrong but wasn't the 1990 BYU @ Wyoming game sold out to where it was standing room only?

Don't know; that was my senior year of high school and I wasn't there.

Looks like the largest crowd this season will be against an FCS team. So Montana did not travel well. How many more fans from Air Force and Florida Atlantic attended? If they did not bring as many as Montana, well more than 4,000 Wyo fans have chosen to do something else on home game Saturdays.

I think a big reason why there were 4K more at the Montana game was the fact that it was also Labor Day Weekend, a good weekend for travel. One thing to always remember is there are Wyoming fans that will make 1-2 game a year, and in a year of uncertainty and change why not go on a 3 day weekend?

Key thing here is that we keep winning the games we should and people will feel it's worth their while to show up.
This was also the weekend of student move in. There were plenty of parents and family in town helping with that. If you're in town already why not take in the game....

That's exactly what happened, but it's more like 2k as Montana certainly brought more than FAU or AFA, just nothing like what Griz fans were claiming on here during the offseason. Combination of factors from my perspective:

1. Game Time - The AFA game was very late. That's a difficult game time for families and those that would want to drive home after the game rather than stay in Laramie.

2. FAU - The casual fan doesn't recognize the FAU name, so if there is any game on the schedule that they might want to skip, this would be the one. I think it's stupid personally, but I do think this occurred to a point.

Overall, our attendance hasn't been bad by our standard YTD, but we really need to put together a couple of winning seasons to truly drive an improvement in attendance and atmosphere.

Those late (TV) games may make UW a lot of money, but they are terrible for attendance of fans that have to travel further than Cheyenne. I know some fans of the AF game drove long distances home after the game, but most stayed in Laramie (including my wife & I). Something else about that - the motels & even the RV park pretty much double their rates on late game nights.

I'm pretty sure we didn't make any money on the AF game, even though it was late at night. The game was on ESPNU. We only get paid if it's a Saturday conference game on ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2. We might get a little bit for Friday ESPN games (like the Utah State one this year), but I'm not sure.

We also don't make any bonus money on the MSU game this weekend because, even though it's a Saturday game on ESPN2, it's a non-conference game.

That's the worst part about having your game assigned to "ESPN Networks." They dictate when you kick off, and depending on the network they choose, you may or may not get a bonus. For the Boise game, we'll be kicking off at 8:15pm on November 22, and there's a chance it'll be on ESPNU or ESPN3 and we don't get paid. We just get stuck with a shitty kick time and a crowd of 15,000.

We didn't receive any money directly for the AFA game, but the MWC's ability (due to time zone) to provide late game content is a key component of our ESPN contract, so the overall revenue the MWC receives is dependent upon conference teams playing those late games.

Personally, I despise ESPN (#FreeSimmons), but I recognize the reality.

I don't mind late games in September too bad. Late games in November in Laramie? Those can be problematic, such as the USU game this year.
