Article Why conference standings don't matter for NCAA Bids

This article talks about Purdue but it applies a lot to Wyoming also.

This is why a lot of us have been saying even if we win out and get to the championship game of the MWC tournament we can most definitely still get left out and we don't have any wins as good as Purdue's. Was interesting. I also looked up Joe Lunardi's bracket after reading this and he has Purdue on his first four out still. All boils down to how bad our OOC SOS is. That is the main thing the committee looks at.

So be prepared even if we go on a good run we might be heading to the NIT.

RPI and SOS is where it's at...I don't get why if you beat a team why can't they keep the RPI of that team at the time when you beat them and NOT currently what it is, why get penalized if they tank the rest of the way, not our fault at the time of the original game. Our conference games this year did not hold nearly as much clout as the Non Conf games did this year... Guess it's a popularity thing and not going to go away anytime soon. One would think they'd like new faces in the NCAA every few years for different fanbases and excitement, but it's all about popular teams and the almighty $$$. I'd rather watch a Wyoming at a 12 seed beating an (just an example) 5 seed Iowa St or that caliber of team rather than a Notre Dame (8) vs Villanova (9).
Blahhhh. blahhh. blah.....

With the Mountain West pretty much sucking across the board in our non-conference schedule, I find it hard to find much sympathy for the MO-West as a whole, despite how badly I want Wyoming to go to the Dance.
Collectively in our top four teams, we have non-conference losses to:

Washington (SDSU)
Cal (WYO)
NC State (BSU)
Loyola-Il (BSU)

These are several chances by our best teams to prove that we are worthy of stealing bids from these other conferences that we screwed up.

If conference standings don't matter then why even play the conference games?? If the number of teams that will get selected from a conference is determined before the conference schedules even start, what's the point? Just skip it all and do a conference tourney. so stupid

Pretty obvious really, the first few games of the season is not indicative of how good a team really is.

Our football team proves that every year.

This is exactly how I feel.

Why do those 13 ooc games mean more than the 18 conference games??

They get so caught up in ooc sos and rpi and fail to open their damn eyes.
For example... CSU and Boise are in or close to in because Top 40 rpi... yet we are 3-0 against them and ahead of them both in the standings. We won the head to heads. We are surviving better in the 18 game mwc schedule than them yet because Florida A&M hasnt won a fucking game Csu and Boise are tourney teams and we arent?

Quit looking at sos numbers and open your eyes!

Yet they put more stock into those first few games than they do mwc play.

They don't put OOC over conference play. They look at the entire body of work which includes both. They don't look at standings but look at wins and losses so conference still matter.

its because our MWC is ranked at a 12 this year, that's the big factor, last 2 years at a a rank of 1 and 2 we'd be in for sure

Yeah this and also the MWC as a whole ranks as having the 24th ranked OOC Schedule out of 33 conferences. That is surely to not allow you to get more than a couple teams from your conference in. Usually having that low of an OOC schedule would be more so suited to a little conference not a MWC or A-10 type conference. Only reason we may get more than 1 bid is because of our recent history of being one of the better conferences. Usually that would only allow for one bid.

Okay, I really hope we go out on the road and play some tough games. I know that teams won't come here. I don't care. Let's go play on the road. Let's go do ASU-Arizona. Washington-Gonzaga. Kansas-Kansas State-Witchita State

Also, too many 1 and done in the tourney the last few years.

Yep.

New Mexico especially. King of the MWC Tourney. Scrubs of the Big Dance.

#3 RPI in the country, and lose to fucking Harvard in Salt Lake City as a 3 seed???

UNLV sucks in the Tourney when they make it lately.

Only SDSU and CSU have gotten wins the past couple years.

Wyoming rarely comes to Arizona, hell I would be happy if they played Grand Canyon.
