Apathy

Maybe I’m letting nostalgia in, but in the past, it seems you’d come here after a loss and there would be 8 threads with 20-30 posters barking about various aspects of the game. Today, there are maybe 5-10 posters bantering back and forth on 2-3 threads. We are spiraling into apathy, which is the most dangerous thing a program can devolve into. It has been building since Bohl declared that we were all little league parents and petulant children. He gave us a license for distance and to not care. Dumb.

I used to go to every game. I’d tailgate. I’d be there 4 hours early. I’ve been to two games this year and my wife and I just agreed we are letting our tickets go next year after 25 years. I’ve threatened it before, but was always hopeful or determined enough that I wasn’t about to let the next season/opportunity go without me being there. The reality is I just have too much else that is ahead of UW and UW athletics that is more enjoyable or engaging.

I will watch when I have time. But the religious experience of being a fanatic is gone. Burman, Bohl, Schroyer, Edwards, Sawvel, and Linder broke me. What was forged in the fire of Brandy, Roach, and Tiller is bent and on the trash heap. And I’m not sad or angry or frustrated about it. That is what should worry Seidel, the BOT and Burman. But it won’t.

Sad

Attendance tells a different story though. People are engaged and going to games still. Set the all time attendance record just last year

I’m guessing it will lag over time but maybe not. I hope they sell out every game and win again. Looked like a decent crowd last night - good for them. The tailgating and game experience (except the game itself) are quite good.

The same sentiment applies to me. I moved much further away from Laramie and have only bought season tickets twice since 2013. Both times I was hyped and both times disappointed mainly due to inept QB play. Instead I have been cherry picking games to attend in person which requires quite an expenditure. This year I had selected 3 games with a couple more anticipated even though I could save huge amounts of cash watching on TV. The ASU game I saw in person and after watching the Idaho game on TV I declared to the wife I am now officially separated from attending Wyoming football games until I am enticed to invest the time, money and energy to make some games.

I had bought season tickets since the 80’s and had a pretty high point total with CJC which was erased the first time I didn’t renew. The incentive to renew and have first choice access to games and events by continuing renewals has backfired regarding my donations. When I lost over 1,000 points I figure the penalty was severe enough that the CJC was giving me the big finger not for failing to donate, but for not continuing over 30 years of zealot season ticket purchases and being faithful to the cause throughout a lot of really shitty football with a happy season here and there.

I have not been able to divorce myself from watching the Pokes on TV but going to Laramie will only be an allure when I feel excited (if ever again) that something special is happening and the teams will be highly competitive with an expectation of winning.

I once was paid $100 (Joe Glenn era) to gather with other Wyoming fans to discuss what would make attendance more enticing and nearly everyone talked about game start times, not scheduling home games when hunting starts, avoiding home games during high school playoffs, etc., and then I spoke up and said “win games, win conference games, build an expectation the team can and will win.” It was amazing that it came across like I had spoken a foreign language and that is when I realized the focus really wasn’t on winning, it was on managing the game day experience. I go to a game desiring to see a win. It makes the experience enjoyable. I no longer care to invest the resources to leave pissed off that another dump was taken by the mediocre leadership and that’s a generous description of what is going on now.

The winning part, for some reason, gets buried under an avalanche of stuff that only matters if the program is mediocre. Does Boise State worry about the "gameday experience"?...probably a bit but they win and are appointment viewing. They know they are the best and continually prove it. Just effing win and the other stuff magically falls into place.

There are also many more venues to talk cowboy football. Pokes nation had almost 300 comments after the game. Twitter (X) also gets a lot of Pokes traffic. Message boards (although I enjoy them) are dinosaurs.

I got banned from Pokes Nation for daring to question the coaching prowess of Bohl. Whoever runs that page can finger their rusty sheriffs badge until it bleeds chunks the size of quarters.

I’m with you. The last game I went to was BYU and when it was evident Sawvel was too stubborn to make a change at QB I was done. I still watch, but as an example I went and sighted in rifles for the 1st half of the Joser game. I did yard work for the 1st half yesterday. I’m not excited. It’s just gone for me. I looked forward to going to cold November games. I might not even watch the ewes. I’m hopeful for basketball. Or women’s soccer………

At WYO, definitely a factor. Interestingly I read a peer reviewed article that concluded of all variables, away record impacted home attendance most. I'll see if I can find it again.
Fascinating....I would never have guessed that. Although...good teams probably have a good away record....good teams tend to have more support. Would like to see it if you find it.

The biggest factor in attendance will always be weather...
Yep, agree. So far - We’ve had the warmest October on record in Laramie with very little precipitation. And all these nice weather Saturdays wasted with bad football :( . I have a feeling Boise game will be miserable weather and there will be about 10,000 to watch the mud stomping.

The main reason I changed my mind about going Saturday was the great weather. That and the hope that Utah State sucks as bad as we did. Still ended up leaving at halftime after watching Svoboda throw it directly to a USU d-back followed giving up a TD.

I wish that was true, but CSU and SDSU are showing that winning doesn't seem to matter as much as TV market.

You sighted in rifles like a week before the season? Shame
