Apathy... it's scary

Last night after work, a couple friends and I went to have a couple beers and shoot the bull. One of my friends came in late and as he was sitting down, looked at the t.v. and Wyoming was down by 27. He just shook his head and quietly said “wow”.

I asked him if he was going to Laramie on Saturday for BYU. He said “you could offer me a limo, stock it full of Crown, throw my friends in with, let me sit next to Dave and Kevin on press row and I still wouldn’t go.” I asked him what he was going to do then on Saturday. “I think Brad and I are going ice fishing on Boysen.” I said “what?? You have never ice fished before in your life!!” He just said “I have nothing else to do.” I asked him if he was at least going to take his radio and listen and he said “what part of ‘I don’t care anymore’, do you not understand?”

This comes from a guy that I watched spend $2,000, that he didn’t have, right out of college, to make a trip to New York to watch the Pokes play in the NIT Final Four back with Fennis and company. The same guy that has gone around road gates to get to Laramie for games when the road was closed because of snow and blizzards. The same guy that has had season tickets to Cowboy football and basketball for as long as I can remember. The same guy that donates more money to the Cowboy Joe Club than I make in 3 months of work and I have a pretty decent job!

Folks, I have been saying that this program is in deep trouble and if the University starts losing too many boosters because of apathy, it is really scary as to what might happen. My friend said that he isn’t renewing his basketball tickets next year and like I said, he has had them for ever, and he is not just blowing smoke…. he is dead serious! If too many people are thinking this way, how and when will they, if ever, come back?

Right now, apathy is a very dangerous and scary word.

If people think that way, are they really fans? I can see someone who is fed up with the current situation not renewing his season tickets. That is fine as long as they renew once a change is made or the team starts playing better. But, if said fan never returns even after the program gets some legs, then they weren't good fans to begin with. Based on what you've mentioned about the guy above, he seems to me like a guy who would jump back on ship if the team met his expectations.

I just want to win and thinking we can be better next year is better than thinking we'll suck. Just my $.02.

Jimmy, you are probably right and am sure he will come back on board if and when they start improving. I am just saying that I think there are a lot of people thinking this way and it obviously shows by the reduction in the attendance. I think all of us want to win, thats why we are fans. Thinking that we are going to be better is better than thinking we are going to suck, no offense but I kind of shrug at that. Where things sit right now and how they look.... I don't see how we will be better. Personal opinion but I don't see the talent and coaching to make us better and compete. We can't afford to just get a little better, we need to get a lot, a ton better just to make up how far we are behind. Losing conference games by 15, 20, 25? Losing to inferior opponents (Hampton, Monmouth) at home?? Absolutely unacceptable and I think people around here are done. I think that alot of people are just going to shrug their shoulders, shake their heads, and quit basically paying attention to the program and stop caring.

Its a bad situation.

This thread kind of got me thinking. Yes...pre Friday, but still.

What consitutes a "good fan" versus a "bad fan" or for that matter a fan that always supports regardless the wins and losses, versus one that drops off in disgust when losing becomes the trend not the exception? Trend being the key here (UW Men's Hoops).

Some "fans" can accept mediocrity, but no "fanbase" ever will. You see it all the time...think about the support for the 2010 NFL Champion Aints...that joint hasn't buzzed ever really...and now? Or how about the Patriots...anyone remember thier fan base in the 70's & 80's vs. now? Not too many years ago (2002-3?), you could walk up to a ticket window before any bWHYu game and get a great seat! Not now. And the list goes on and on.

I hate losing. Losing sucks. I am a diehard UW fan. And I choose to NOT accept losing. How I (or anyone) accepts losing is thier choice...whether it is bitching on this message board, calling / writing the AD, whining and complaining with peers, CJC donations, finding other things to do on gamedays, etc., etc., etc. Does it mean they are not "good fans"? No IMO.

Jimmy, I think you are missing 7220's point. If a fan of this magnitude would rather freeze his balls off and go ice fishing(whom is not an ice fisherman) instead of watching his beloved pokes who sends generous donations too, I think we have a f^(*&*(g problem. I was born a WYO fan. My father is Psychotic WYO fan and he can barely stomach watching the games anymore. His dad was one of two athletes that had lettered in four different sports in WYO history. He told me this Saturday, he has had enough he will not be attending games anymore. I think the point 7220 is trying to make is we are in some serious fucking trouble if we are losing some of our biggest die hard fans. I have personally seen it myself and for some reason I keep turning on the MTN and torturing myself by watching this sorry ass coach try not to loose by 20 night in and night out. If Burman does not make a move after this season we will be completly screwed. Truthfully, even with McClain I thought we had a somewhat decent chance of pulling off an upset from time to time but with Schroyer I would have to be completly fucking dillusional to think he could turn this program around. Anyways, die hard fan or casual fan we will eventual loose them all with this current staff. Enough said 7220 was dead on about his assesment of the fans of our program. We are approaching a situation that might not be curable if action is not take immediately. I hope Burman grows some balls or gets his balls out of Schroyer's ass and cuts him loose.
