an idea to stay relevant

so it sucks we lost. I had it on my phone for about 15 minutes when things got ugly. Im not here to bash the performance, or pump sunshine. but I have been doing a lot of thinking about Wyoming athletics and I have a few thoughts I want to pass on.

first off, I view the game of football as one of the fastest inflating businesses in the world. the past decade has brought way to much change for my liking, and the next decade I fear will be even worse. So the questions I ended up asking myself yesterday are as follows.

1. how long do any of the non-p5 schools have to make a statement? I whole heartedly believe we have at max 5 years at most from today to get ourselves, and the other colleges that don't matter, to achieve sustained success enough to not be left behind. in many ways, we were left behind 15 years ago. But I have a glimmer of hope that if we can have consistent winning records in successive years, we could at least keep our current status of just below the P5. not a ton of time... pretty much poop or get off the pot. so, there are a few things going for us that I think we need to look into. the big one is cost of attendance and the deregulation of certain NCAA guidelines. which led me to my second question.

2. what can help us secure recruiting, regardless of P5 membership. I started thinking about what positive aspects recruits talk about in regards to the university of Wyoming. what do kids like about Wyoming, that they cant get else where? open spaces, the outdoors, and hunting and fishing. these are the big three. have you been to eddie Yarbrough's twitter page? he has a picture of a string of fish, while wearing camo... which is weird, cause I didn't think that you need to wear camo while fishing lol...

so here is the idea, after all that crap you had to just read and digest. this idea is about getting ahead of the inflation, about embracing Wyoming and adding a recruiting pitch that just can't be angled unless you are a Wyoming resident.

What if we legislated a change to our cost of attendance. this would include all sports, male or female, and would without a doubt be a home run. I think our full cost of attendance is around 3200. I propose we raise it $800-1000 to start a four year hunting residency with caveats. this would not be cash to students, but it would start a program that "teaches life in Wyoming". it would have to be worded in a way that walks a grey area.

the program would look something like this. the 800-1000 bucks would be an annual item. incoming freshman would go to hunter safety course, or they could choose not to ever take money for hunting. in which case those that choose could use their year program money to take a outdoor inspired trip... like a summer float trip on the north platt near encampment... etc.

if they do choose to take the resident hunting side... then they attend the hunter safety course. after freshman year, the program would offer the athlete a guided hunting trip, paid for through cost of attendance. the student pays nothing. this would be provide for the entire length of scholarship.

coaches could than say "do like hunting and fishing... well we offer that in Wyoming. We cover that in your scholarship". it basically would give us a unique selling point. Now, this is not the only way to go with this. but I think some changes need to be made... get proactive instead of reactive.

I just needed to get that out of my system. at least we have things to think about instead of north dakota

I like where your going with this. It would appeal to a lot of future recruits in our region. Kids in the Rocky Mountain states I think would enjoy that. But, I don't know how it would help with city and suburb recruits.

We are already left behind. The only question at this point is how much longer will be willing to participate at this level. When dollars start to tighten up even more, the P5 is going to split. They will consume every dollar associated with CFB.

Once that happens, and it is going to happen without some sort of intervention (government or ?), then our football program will become much less important. It is only the front door of your University if it can be seen.

I think we have 10 years maybe 20. It certainly could be under that; I'm just guessing.

Follow the money and follow history. The current events are eerily similar to the same time period when Ivy Leagues became irrelevant.

Ya i thought of that a bit. I think u could put in a stipulation that if a kid had a hardship or no interest then either then venison could be donated in exchange for a gift card... or if absolutly no interest then the student could cash it out at the end of term.

We need the media bubble to burst. According to one poster on here if/when it does burst the big $$ will dry up.

I don't think I disagree with that, but I think if/when that happens, it will accelerate the split. There will always be some money because CFB is so popular. If you have less money coming in, how do you keep more for yourself? Split and kick out a few people. I've always thought that it was more likely the P5 contracts than expands.

If they did that, they would absorb essentially every penny associated with CFB.

Only a matter of time before we are FCS. Enjoy the next couple years being FBS, it was nice while it lasted.
OOOOOHKAYYY?? :orly:

Just ignore him LP, he clearly doesn't understand how college athletics works. Unless he is referring to everyone not P5 dropping to a lower level similar to FCS, but considering his track record where the majority of his posts tell us we should drop down, I'm guessing that's not the case.

Lifetime Hunting Residency
Bullshit. I'll lose my shit if some kids who are here for 4 years get a lifetime license but those of us born and raised here and actively serving in the military can't get lifetime licenses without paying the ever increasing fee

I'll put it a better way. Permanent resident status as far as hunting and fishing is concerned.

Your comprehension sucks btw. I never mentioned lifetime license in the very least. Let them hunt and fish Wyoming as if they were a resident for the rest of their life. Not that big of a deal. Might just seal the deal on a few recruits that are pondering.

A real view on this is that TV revenue is going to dry up faster than California. ESPN is already feeling the crunch and with the advent of streaming sports, it is only going to accelerate. The best thing that the University of Wyoming can do is to work on their own infrastructure to broadcast games and let the media come to them to purchase the rights to broadcast. I know right now we may not be a hot commodity, but i truly believe that this is where college athletics is headed. Compete, win, reap the rewards....

Out of the box thinking is where we need to take Wyo Athletics moving forward. Our brand is different, our state, its resources and our population represents a distinct type of independence. The next president of this university will hopefuly grasp this and perhaps the two critical components for leadership and funding can combine to develop a strategic plan to make some pivotal changes for the direction of the school. Blalock and his foundation represent some of the best fundraising in the country. Keep thinking of positive ideas and posting, the negativity of this board leads to nothing. The folks that look at the landscape as only bleak and unforgiving live lives that probably emmulate those unfortunate circumstances. We have a great state and university, I feel fortunate to have attended and cut my teeth here. I will always believe in the promise of a better tomorrow, sorry if that pisses some off.

Yikes! No need to be so snarky! I misread your original post.

I couldn't agree more.

On the contrary, I tend to be a realist and reality is not good for most if not all of G5 unless you consider an FCS like arrangement as okay. It is almost a given that we won't be playing at the highest level of CFB in the not to distant future. We barely are currently. When that happens (a formal separation of P5 and G5), much of what we are debating now will be largely irrelevant.
