American Flag Steamboat Copyright issue

Ive heard that people trying to buy the american flag steamboat at brown and gold are being told they aren't for sale anymore. They said that their is a copyright issue and somebody filed suit over the logo. Anybody heard this or have any other info on the issues?

I have a pair on the back of my truck, so good luck at trying to get them from off. Damn copyright asshats.

Haha no problem. I wonder what the issue is though. How can you file suite over a logo the university owns unless you can sue over the use of the American flag.

haha. I have them on my car and my replica helmets. I won't hand them over.

I totally agree. Something just doesn't seem right but two of my friends have been told this is two different occasions. I can't imagine they would tell customers this if it wasn't true.

That would seem really odd unless someone did what I did and created it, sent it to UW, then claimed copyright stuff afterward. I can't do that since I signed a copyright release to UW..

What you are told is correct. I won't divuldge where I learned of this, but to make a long story short, some asshat has the "copyright" on (and I quote), all red, white, and blue buckinghorses. When inquired upon whether he was concerned about the state flag (as it is also red, white, & blue) the response was no. Which is interesting. Basically the B&G had to pull them from the shelves, while this gets sorted out.

This is curious. The State of Wyoming owns the bucking horse and rider image. Could it be that State of Wyoming is challenging the selling of the decals because the maker is not paying to use the image?

I'm sure the state and university were getting their cut of the decals. I had a friend that worked at a screen printing shop and he said they were required to put a 7% mark-up on anything with the bucking horse and rider on it for the state. That doesn't seem too unreasonable.

There is a guy claiming he holds a trademark from the early 2000s that he has rights to all steamboats containing colors red, white, and blue.

that's weird, I wouldn't think you can claim a copyright on a already copyrighted image. That would be like me saying, I'm claiming a copyright on all non blue ford logos.

Big mistake.

You should have gouged those fuckers, then turned around and re-donated all the "income" back into the CJC...a win-win.

I thought about seeing if they would pay me for it, but I was really worried that if they had to pay for it that they wouldn't have used it.. and I wanted the logo to be used way more than I wanted financial gain out of it. But you're right, I really could have donated it all back to CJC.. which would have been better for everyone. Oh well.

The guy claiming copyright on the red/white/blue logo... douche move. I know they're selling them for a pretty nice profit, but weak sauce.. put the U before yourself.
