ALL THAT EFFORT and we get stuck with UNLV

I know we pounded them in Laramie a couple of months ago, but it just always feels wrong to draw the Rebels in the first round of the tournament. I haven't been paying all that close attention... did we thump them because the matchups are good, or just because they suck on the road?

Yes, I am concerned about this game. Sure, the Pokes thumped them back in January but UNLV beat Utah State twice. I don’t think either team is the same since that January game. I guess I will just look forward to watching a good game.

Is UNLV a very good basketball team? No

Are they better than they were in January? Yes

Will we beat them in what basically amounts to a home game for them? Very unlikely. I give it about a 10% chance. I’d bump that to 25% if it were on a true neutral court.

UNLV's results are a mixed bag. As mentioned above, they beat Utah St. 2X and they also beat Boise St. 2X. They lost twice to San Diego st., New Mexico, and the sheep. But they obviously are playing far better now than back in early January. We will really have to shoot well to beat them.

This is the matchup I was hoping for. I don't think we'll pound them by 30 again, but Wyoming matches up VERY well against UNLV. The rest of the bracket sets up nicely, too. Utah State is beatable, as is Grand Canyon.

Very mediocre MWC in the final year with this alignment. Which is kind of disappointing. MWC is only two years removed from the season they put 6 teams in the NCAA tournament. Maybe just a one bid league this year. Here are the chances for each team. Really feel like Wyoming is better than .8% -- just given how inconsistent everybody has been across the league.

1Utah State+18034.4%
2San Diego State+45019.9%
3New Mexico+33315.7%
4Grand Canyon+6007.8%
6Boise State+6509.5%
5Nevada+14005.2%
7Colorado State+18003.3%
8UNLV+40003.0%
9Wyoming+45000.8%
10Fresno State+175000.2%

You never know. I remember in 2006 when Wyoming went 5-11 in conference and made it all the way to the conference tournament championship game before losing to SDSU in overtime. I'm pretty sure Brandon Ewing was a freshman and Brad Jones was also on that team. It also helped that they were playing the MWC tournament in Denver at that time - Wyoming fans showed up strong despite the lackluster regular season.

You also had Justin Williams blocking every shot known to man that season

That's right. Forgot about him.

That was a weird season. Started pretty good and then they lost a lot of close games down the stretch. I think they ended up losing their last six conference games before turning thing around significantly in the MWC tournament.

I always wondered what their seed would have been in the NCAA Tournament had they found a way to knock off SDSU. Surely would have been a 15 or 16.
