I have not seen the contract but believe you are incorrect. I’ve heard and read that the buyout is all ‘guaranteed’ compensation which far exceeds the base salary.
He is guaranteed $1.1 million for each of first 3 years and $1.25 million for years 4 and 5. That is an additional $4.7 million of money he is guaranteed.
The very definition of guaranteed is an obligation to pay. The article even states the contract provides that Sawvel collects all guaranteed money if he is fired early without cause. The article uses the word guaranteed when it defines both guaranteed and base earlier.

Could go down as being worse than hiring Schroyer (and extending him, then firing him mid-season).
Or, could go down as being worse than hiring Allen Edwards.
Or, could go down as being worse than hiring Dickface, and extending him.

Thank you Air Force!!!! They just saved the MWC and showed loyalty to Wyoming. We should thank them at the game on Saturday with a chant IMO.
The MWC will exist with Wyoming, Air Force, New Mexico and Hawaii sticking together. We will see who makes up the rest. But Air Force saved us.

I will never understand the animosity towards Dave Christensen. His last 2 years were not good. But we went to bowl games in 2 of his first 3 years and we were 8-4 with a true freshman QB Brett Smith in his 3d year at Wyo. I remember in the war we were beating TCU in the 3d quarter and then Smith got knocked out of the game. Our only 2 conference losses were to TCU and Boise st.. And that was when both programs were really good.
I don't know anyone who thought Linder was a bad hire when he made it. And 2 years in, it looked like a great hire. When Ryan Thorburn was doing his podcast as a Star Trib. writer, he talked about Linder complaining about the lack of NIL at Wyoming. Whatever you think of him personally, I thought he worked a miracle last year to even get us competitive. Obviously, he didn't want to be here. But I believe he would have been here a long time if not for the portal and NIL.
