After today's noon wake-up and a bit of time to reflect

I couldn't be any prouder of our football team, fans, and coaches. That was the right way to start the season.

We saw some really encouraging things last night.

1. Josh Allen didn't get pressured all night. The line did an outstanding job in pass protection.
2. Our offense has the ability to put together big drives and eat up huge chunks of clock. That is a pretty good defense that UNI has. We moved the ball against them with success all night. Yeah, we had our bad series. Usually those we're from penalties or mistakes killing our drives.
3. Josh Allen will win games here. He's one hell of a competitor and has the combination of arm and legs to make defending Wyoming a nightmare task for most teams.
4. Austin Conway is the dank nasty. That guy is a real weapon with the ball in his hands. We've got to figure out ways to get him the ball more on offense. He's a real threat to score every time he touches the ball. Punt to him at your own risk, he will score points this year in the return game.
5. We have a kicker. Yes, he missed two potential game winning field goals. He did a lot more right then he did wrong last night. Almost all of his kicks are touchbacks. He turned extra points back into extra points for Wyoming. He buried all of those. He made as many field goals as he missed. Cooper Rothe is my hero.
6. Defensively, we're down right fast. Our guys can tackle. They didn't get blown off the ball on the interior of the line. We did well stopping the run against a great running team. We shut down everyone on their offense with the exception of Gilligan(the receiver) and the QB. We have to stop giving up big plays, but the defense is night and day better than last year.
7. We don't have much depth. We've got to remain healthy and that always requires a great deal of luck.
8. It looked like an opener. We made a lot of mistakes. I was hoping Granderson's early penalty wasn't going to cost us the game by spotting them 7 while the d was playing lights out. We killed a lot of our own drives with penalties. We extended some of their drives with penalties. We have to stop doing that. We blew some coverages and got caught out of position leading to giving up big plays on defense. There's a lot of room for improvement.
9. You can't put a price on heart. It would have been really easy to give up and let that one slip away. We didn't. We went with the two hour rain delay and three overtimes, kept the eyes on the prize, and came out with an inspiring win. That's a sign of maturity, which is really unexpected with the amount of youth on this team. We're playing a lot of young guys, but they're young guys with game reps and it showed last night.
10. Craig Bohl and staff are recruiting at a very high level. They're getting guys that can win us a championship. The future looks bright for these Pokes.
11. Andrew Wingard is the next in the line of a lot of great Wyoming safeties: Chris Pro, Jon Wendling, Al Rich, Trent Gamble, Brian Lee.....Andrew Wingard. Wyoming's football success is almost always accompanied by a great safety. We have a great one again.

Those are some of my rambling post-game thoughts. All and all, it's a very good day to be a Poke fan.

This was something Bohl noted in postgame too.

"I thought we'd have a shot to win, but I thought we'd have to play more error-free than what we did. If we can clean up some of the mistakes we made - countless number of holding penalties annd the special teams plays - we got some things to work with. I'm personally really excited."

To add to your thoughts,
12. Logan Wilson looks like he's for real. Isn't he a walk on too?
13. Josh Allen has some FIRE man. Not just on the field, but yelling at the student section to get going when the D was out there and everything. I like this guy a lot.
14. How long has it been since we had a 100 yard rusher and 2 100 yard receivers in the same game? Maybe Herron, Rufran, and Brett/Wick? Maybe?

Agree that Logan Wilson is legit. Where did he come from???! Makes me wonder who else we have waiting in the wings.

Josh Allen is just what we need. I hope Chandler Garrett is soaking up everything he can from him.

Very impressed with the front four. We actually had a pass rush!! Granderson is excellent, seriously excellent. Ghiffan is as good as advertised, too. Cain is a quality DT as well.

Very impressed with how well Rush handled his shit as a true freshmen. I tried to watch him a bit and I was impressed when ever I tried to watch him.

Conway!!!! He is awesome! So electric.

DJ May plays as hard as anyone I've ever seen. He is fast! So glad he is a Poke.

I can't believe I forgot to shout out the Wyoming boys. I guess I didn't take enough time to reflect after all.

Upon further reflection, Logan Wilson played out of his mind for the home opener. He had a player of the game type of performance with his fumble recovery and key tackles. I don't know how many times on third down when Logan was the guy that wrapped em up short again. He had multiple drive ending tackles. It's always good when the kid playing great is repping the 307 o.g. card as well.

I have big expectations of Fort and Harshman. They'll be good tight ends for us. It's nice of Bohl to get some locals playing key rolls for the team. It helps the state pride when our Wyoming boys are playing for us.

The only area I was disappointed was tight end. I had expectations of the tight end being more of a receiving threat. We didn't have as many passes to our tight ends as I expected. We utilized the tight end for a touchdown but it wasn't a big part of the receiving playbook last night.

Especially because there was talk of how great Hollister was looking, I thought for sure he'd be more involved

Does anyone have a list of true freshman who played this game?

Also, does anyone have a list of all the receivers who entered the game (not just those who made the state sheet)? I wonder if Okwoli or Joe Parker or Conway were in there for many snaps... we need to build depth behind gentry and maulhardt. Getting 2 100 yard guys is cool, but I want to see a better distribution going forward.

Parker and Conway were both out a bit. Not sure about Okwoli though

Josh Allen seems to check off most of the skills NFL evaluators look for in a QB. Great size, great arm, good mobility, experience in a pro-style offense, etc. Some refinement is necessary, but he has me excited for the next three years!

A lot of these guys believed that about Brett smith. Stats and playmaking in college football games (bouknight style). I think you are evaluating talent for playing as a pro. As a pro prospect he is the best qb prospect since Bramlet. Has the potential to be way better. Awesome that he is a soph. This guy is a legitimate pro prospect.

Thanks. It sure would be nice to have names on the back of jerseys for this very reason...

Pretty sure I saw Cashh Maluia out there. He was the one that demolished the blocker into the punter

Or you could just do what the coaches do and learn the numbers. I know, I know, maths are hard...

You're right, how silly of me to not memorize the number of every true freshman on the roster before the first game of the year.

CJ Johnson played a bit too, but I think we knew that was gonna happen

To top it off, Josh Allen was named MWC offensive player of the week.

My only real complaint about that game was that second to final drive. We went ultra conservative and focused more on clock than moving the ball to the first down marker. We needed to run clock and move the ball - game over. Instead, we had to punt.

Our defense shut down the run. I don't remember the last time we really did that. 2007 maybe? Regardless, they were able to pass on us. Giving the ball back to them was a mistake - just as we saw. They tied the game up.

We should have focused on moving the ball and running the clock - instead of just running the clock :(
