I couldn't be any prouder of our football team, fans, and coaches. That was the right way to start the season.
We saw some really encouraging things last night.
1. Josh Allen didn't get pressured all night. The line did an outstanding job in pass protection.
2. Our offense has the ability to put together big drives and eat up huge chunks of clock. That is a pretty good defense that UNI has. We moved the ball against them with success all night. Yeah, we had our bad series. Usually those we're from penalties or mistakes killing our drives.
3. Josh Allen will win games here. He's one hell of a competitor and has the combination of arm and legs to make defending Wyoming a nightmare task for most teams.
4. Austin Conway is the dank nasty. That guy is a real weapon with the ball in his hands. We've got to figure out ways to get him the ball more on offense. He's a real threat to score every time he touches the ball. Punt to him at your own risk, he will score points this year in the return game.
5. We have a kicker. Yes, he missed two potential game winning field goals. He did a lot more right then he did wrong last night. Almost all of his kicks are touchbacks. He turned extra points back into extra points for Wyoming. He buried all of those. He made as many field goals as he missed. Cooper Rothe is my hero.
6. Defensively, we're down right fast. Our guys can tackle. They didn't get blown off the ball on the interior of the line. We did well stopping the run against a great running team. We shut down everyone on their offense with the exception of Gilligan(the receiver) and the QB. We have to stop giving up big plays, but the defense is night and day better than last year.
7. We don't have much depth. We've got to remain healthy and that always requires a great deal of luck.
8. It looked like an opener. We made a lot of mistakes. I was hoping Granderson's early penalty wasn't going to cost us the game by spotting them 7 while the d was playing lights out. We killed a lot of our own drives with penalties. We extended some of their drives with penalties. We have to stop doing that. We blew some coverages and got caught out of position leading to giving up big plays on defense. There's a lot of room for improvement.
9. You can't put a price on heart. It would have been really easy to give up and let that one slip away. We didn't. We went with the two hour rain delay and three overtimes, kept the eyes on the prize, and came out with an inspiring win. That's a sign of maturity, which is really unexpected with the amount of youth on this team. We're playing a lot of young guys, but they're young guys with game reps and it showed last night.
10. Craig Bohl and staff are recruiting at a very high level. They're getting guys that can win us a championship. The future looks bright for these Pokes.
11. Andrew Wingard is the next in the line of a lot of great Wyoming safeties: Chris Pro, Jon Wendling, Al Rich, Trent Gamble, Brian Lee.....Andrew Wingard. Wyoming's football success is almost always accompanied by a great safety. We have a great one again.
Those are some of my rambling post-game thoughts. All and all, it's a very good day to be a Poke fan.
