After much contemplation about the potential for success in the basketball program this year and having watched or listened to 12 games thus far, I have concluded that this team is unlikely to exceed .500 this year. I expect that there will be some big wins and some horrible home court losses along with the typical road losses.
6-10 in conference play along with an 8-6 record in non-conference games will end the regular season at 14-16 with the team struggling to stay ahead of TCU and AFA for 7th place while watching CSU slip past to 6th with Utah in 5th is what I am afraid might happen.
I am hoping that we overcome Utah and CSU to take no less than 5th, but it is challenging to see that happening.
Watch for us to do things like whip Utah severely in Laramie and then go on the road 3 days later and hand Air Force its only conference victory shooting 2-30 from the arc over a zone defense while letting a guy who averages 2.3 points a game go off for 25. I don't want to see that happen, but it is hard not to feel that way after seeing us play 24 minutes from average to good and the other 16 minutes like the 3 Stooges on too much valium.
Perhaps a convincing victory over Akron will help make the outlook optimistic, but this next game will be a big challenge for the team.
