Can anyone verify for me that McClain was on a committee for recommending a new AD when Burman was being hired? Have heard a rumor that McClain was in favor of Welniak(?) over Burman but I was thinking that Burman was on some recommending committee earlier on but not when Burman was hired. Anyone know anything about this?

Well, I don't really know how he'll pan out but I have not seen or heard anything from Miles to suggest he deserves idiotic comments like that. Other than Boyd Grant, no one has been successful at csu. They have very little fan support and maybe the worst gym in the league (other than air force).
By the way, Miles had more success as a head coach than Schroyer before they started their current jobs.

I guess I don't know if he's a great recruiter, but as a strategist and motivator he's pretty damn good in my opinion, and he has his program trending in the right direction. He inherited a bigger mess than Schroyer did at the same time, and I can't say that our program is in better shape than CSU's as of right now. You can badmouth him all you want because he's CSU's coach and we all hate those pukes, but at the end of the day if you had a time machine and could go back three years and force Burman to hire Miles instead of Schroyer I think everyone on this board would do it.

What mess did Shroyer inherit? The only issue other than being an ordinary team was grades. Did Shroyer kick one single kid off the team because he wasn't getting good enough grades? I don't think so. Shroyer inherited a team with a winning record, a team that had been deep in the MWC tourney, a team with 3 starters returning, a team with major subs returning amounting to 80% of all playing time from the previous years team, a team with arguably the best guard and the best guard tandem in the conference.
All of you suckers, and Burman, bought Shroyer's lame excuses for poor performance in 2008. "rebuilding" my arse! The only rebuilding Shroyer had to do was getting kids to attend classes. After 3 years, now the program is in a total shambles. We are far FAR worse now than any time since Joby Wright's last season.....possibly worse than any team since pre-Brandenberg.
bladerunnr said:Jimmy, I think you are somewhat correct. I remember once Justin Williams was gone, McClain's last year was not good. Travis Nelson and Eric Plat were not really working out and we just had no inside game. Also, the fight in New Mexico and the 50 pt beat down to Air force when everyone was suspended was the last nail in the coffin for McClain.
However, the returning talent was not bad. We were picked to finish 3d or 4th in the league. However, I agree that McClain was running the program into the ground. If I remember right, if he had not got us to the MWC championship game the year before, he would have been let go.
Here's the problem as I see it: what recruit will come here with the program in it's current condition? A player has to wonder why have there been all these defections and can this guy coach a winning team? In a way, this is like Joe Glen's last year. A recruit must know that the coach is on the hot seat. So if he comes here, there is a chance that he will be playing for someone else the following year.
IMHO, we are looking at another terrible season next year unless Schroyer can bring in some JC kids who can help asap. A JC kid might take a chance where he knows he can get playing time right away. Of course, you don't always get the best students when you go the JC route. That was McClain's dilemna. Now, it's Schroyer's.
I really wouldn't compare the two. Though Glenn was not the best of Div. 1 coaches (to say the least), he at least had a very good personality and actually encouraged his players instead of just shouting at them.bladerunnr said:Jimmy, I think you are somewhat correct. McClain's teams were trending poorly in terms of on-the-court results, the lack of discipline led to a very bad spell of negative publicity for the university (the brawl in the Pit), and the team's academic issues were threatening to cost the program scholarships. I'm obviously not defending Schroyer, considering that the whole thrust of my post was that I never wanted UW to hire him in the first place and I still feel that way, but it would be disingenuous to say Schroyer inherited a great situation. CSU was a trainwreck at that same point in time, though. Now it's our program that's on the verge of getting derailed.
