About mid-way through the season. Thoughts on the team?

Mine-

Offense-Smith is a stud. How the hell was he rated 2 stars? But oh well, he is a nightmare for defenses, no matter what they do. He could seriously be an All-American in a couple years, the way he plays.
O-line has finally gelled. It took 3 years, but they are doing great, especially compared to last year. Even when the occasional defender gets past them, Smith is a pain in the ass to sack, as he has proven many times.
RBs-We have a nice balance of RBs led by AA. They have done well.
WRs-Herron has been a pleasant surprise, but overall, they need to be more consistent. Could we somehow lure Jovon back to Laramie to coach the next great Wyoming WR?

Overall, I'd give the offense a solid B. Much better than last year, and led by a true freshmen at that. Also, Brandon rocks as an OC.

Defense-We have some great players that can shine, but overall, they have been too inconsistent.

D-line-Size has been an issue all season so far, but with a few recent changes, that looks to have been fixed. Biezuns and Knapton are excellent DEs, but neither should have EVER been DTs. Hopefully with the moves like Sumpter, the D-line can start to dominate.

LBs-We have some really good players led by Brian Hendricks, but they have not been consistent at all. Maybe with moving Korey Jones to being a full time LB, that will change.

DBs-Ouch. Blown assignments and really soft coverage has hurt. Blair Burns though, looks to be REALLY good.

Defense-D+/C-. They need more consistency and a better DC.

ST-McCoy seems to be getting into his groove. And Sullivan seems to have finally realized what his job is. Coverage needs to improve though. But I need to see some more consistency from Sullivan before he's off the hook.

ST-D. Need more consistency before I can even consider raising their grade. Ah, the difference that 2 players can make (Prosinski and Watts).

Overall, tbere is a LOT more talent on the field, that's for sure. But defense HAS to improve and so do Special Teams before we can even think of competing for a conference title.

Thoughts?

I agree with most what you said, but (i might get in a little trouble) I believe Hendricks is the weak link. When I see a player missing tackles, getting run over, it's always Hendricks. Believe me, I wasn't looking for Hendricks, but I saw bad plays and it turned out to be him.

Against UNLV, they had the ball on the 3 and ran it inside, we had LB step in the gap and tried to make a play flat footed and got blasted. One play doesn't make a player, but it seems that I've seen him on the short end of poor tackling and bad play. I like the kid and like a lot of UW fans, he's one of my favorites. I've just soured on his play a bit.

I don't like to single out players - I think that is the coaches job, but you aren't imagining this lax. A couple of times in the UNLV game he was lost, out of position, and couldn't figure out what the defensive call was.

My thoughts so far......inconsistent and untested. Clearly, they can hammer nobody's like Texas State and UNLV, but was destroyed by a vastly overrated NU team and annihilated by a WAC school. Don't know what to think about the future games.

I think its funny that most fans think @Air Force and @San Diego State are possible wins. Just because the defense held up against UNLV doesn't mean it won't rear its ugly head again. When really, the game everyone should be looking as a possible upset is the TCU game! Remember what happened the last time an injured/inexperienced Horned Frog team came to Laramie? Not to mention, you can bet the Frogs will be looking ahead to their game in Boise.

I think Wyoming goes into the CSU game 5-6, but I've been wrong before.

You think its funny we as Wyoming fans think @ AFA and @ SDSU are possible wins? Well what the hell are we supposed to say? Golly gee, those are unwinnable, those teams are too good for lowly Wyoming, we might as well not even make the trip. I don't even know why we play the games when we have experts like J-Rod telling us how it is.

Thanks. I'll send my tickets back for the SDSU game and save the gas for the drive down there.

I don't see how you would think it is funny these are possible wins. If you enjoy watching Wyoming lose so bad, you should probably go hang out on a Boise board or somewhere else. Every team on the schedule this year is a possible win, and our chances against AFA/SDSU aren't bad.

SDSU
2010 L 38-48
2009 W 30-27
2008 W 35-10
2007 L 24-27
2006 W 27-10

AFA
2010 L 14-20
2009 L 0-10
2008 L 3-23
2007 L 12-20
2006 L 24-31

I don't see any major blowouts except for maybe the 2008 AFA game.

At the same time, I don't know why your calling special attention to the TCU game. Even when they are down they are not an easy team to beat. I can't wait for this bye week to be over, and in the case that Wyoming loses a game, I for damn sure won't be laughing about it.

I thought I was the only one noticing this... I didn't want to say anything but it's nice to know I'm not the only one who has been disappointed in his performance.

That makes a couple of us, but I didn't want to say anything either and hoped he would just get better. He has got caught in the wrong gap multiple times, horribly abused in the passing game and when he does make a tackle it is usually just pulling the guy down while getting dragged forward for another 4 yards.

My question is why hasn't the coaching staff done something about this. They would have to be blind to not see this on the field or on game film.

I don't like singling out players all too much, but they get individual praise for being good and making plays, so they probably be critiqued if they are doing poorly. The problem sometime arises is that they are making plays or looking bad because of inadequacies of the team in other areas. Chris Pro comes to mind in that department. An NFL draft pick that was criticized by myself and others last year was probably being victimized because of the D-lines inability to stop the run. Then he gets burned on play action. It's hard to tell.

I just know that on the UNLV TD, he was victimized. The D-line did their part and took on the O-line. There wasn't an O lineman that made it to the second level and he was free to step up in the hole to stop the RB. He was in the hole, but didn't attack it. He stepped in the hole but remained on the goal line. The RB will win that everytime against a flat footed LB. He attacks the hole, he gets to drill the RB at the line of scrimmage. Maybe the RB falls forward for a TD, maybe not. It seems that he lets the runner attack him instead of attacking himself. But what do I know? I chose hunting season over playing football after pee wee.

I think if we can manage to stiffen up our red zone defense and force fieldgoals instead of touchdowns we will go bowling.

I was clearly wrong on this one, but my point still stands. I thought Wyoming would have a chance to stun TCU before this SDSU win. Can Wyoming fans make WMS a living hell for those horny amphibians? Heavy snow is projected for next week. You all better show up!!!

And? LOUD AND PROUD, BABY

After watching all the games I have watched our defensive line is suspect due to size. They play strong in the first half but by the 4th quarter if our Offense doesn't have an amazing 3rd quarter then our D is completely spent.

2 surgeries in 3 months, both knees, and for 2 of the 3 games I had made, I had to leave early because my knee could not take it. And right now, it seems as if I have a bit of anemia with light headedness. Not fun.
