A Proud Tradition:UW Basketball

Hey I was just reminiscing about how I felt when I was a student going to a hoop games at UW. One thing my super hardcore Pokes friend and me talked about back then at game once was how Wyoming had a tradition of being a pretty badass basketball team. We had that OLD championship banner in there. We knew about the 80's teams that were rock solid/legendary. The 90's had Theo, Shyatt 1, and continued monster rivalries (loved it when Utah and BYU were around). A few years before this conversation we had the 02 tourney team which upon reflection was even better then last years one. Man and in between big runs we always managed to be somewhat respectable too.Worth watching as a fan. Most students should get the chance to witness a decent to outstanding team within their 4-5 years education. We're lucky that same tradition still runs proud today.

Go Pokes!

Here's a sweet quick link to an older online stats guide of us I found to go with this. It's got all our history and records to 2011. Fucking sweet to just look at, relive some of the memories, and learn some things you didn't know from the past programs you were too young to see etc.

Go Pokes. I have a good feeling about the next 5 years.

Duuuuuuddddddeeeee I KNOW right? Shy is landing us Florida and Cali recruits with ease. This shit is just bonkers right now
Not to mention he seems to just be picking up players that the fans love. Cowboy legends. BUILDING tradition further. So awesome I love it.

Thanks Cosmic. This link is bad ass. It's a must read for Cowboys fans. You da man.

I knew the 34 team was the original national champion. The accomplishments of that team are amazing:

1. 20 game win streak
2. The entire starting five was all-american.
3. 52 consecutive conference victories in "Hells Half Acre".
4. Named national champion by the only organization keeping track at the time.

Willard "Dutch" Wittie was the coach that set the table for Ev Shelton.

A little love for my driver's ed teacher. He almost set the scoring record bombing away without a three point line.

"Another Shelton star during the late ‘50’s was Tony Windis. A native of Long Island, N.Y., Windis was considered one of the finest shooters ever to play at Wyoming. During his senior year of 1958-59, he averaged 24.4 points per game, the fifth-best scoring season in history. The Hall of Famer was ever-so-close to breaking Capua’s record on a January night in 1958 against New Mexico. While the Cowboys were romping to a 101-61 victory in the Fieldhouse, Windis was 19 of 30 from the field and 12 of 14 from the foul line for 50 points, one shy of Capua’s record. Of his 50 points that night, 33 came in the second half. "

This is one reason why one of you high rolling cash hogs needs to get the AA renamed "Hell's Half Acre". We had a 52 game conference win streak in "Hell's Half Acre". Rememeber, we won two national titles while our boys called Half Acre home.

This is from Curt Gowdy.

"I was a rabid Cowboy Basketball fan as
a boy growing up in Cheyenne. I used to watch
games in Half Acre from the balcony with my legs
hanging over the edge. Les Witte and Ed McGinty
were some of my favorite players to watch.
“Hell’s Half Acre" had one of the biggest
playing courts in America at the time and we used
to run teams to death there. Teams died at the
altitude and we could play with anyone. Even the
name, Hell’s Half Acre, made it memorable.
Wyoming had as good of fans as anywhere
in America. They always packed the place.
Wyoming Basketball means a lot to me."

Another reason:

"Dubbed “Hell’s Half Acre” because of the difficulty for opponents to
win there, Wyoming played eight perfect seasons in this gym. Coach
Everett F. Shelton had three undefeated home seasons in a row in 1941,
1942 and 1943. Other spotless years were 1929, 1930, 1933, 1934
and 1947."

The best reason, our record in "Hells Half Acre": 222-44

No problem just putting that UW education to good internet research use ahahah :thumb: This is the kind of stuff fans, players, and staff need to see right? Whoever surfs this board needs to know what've stood for. Thank you for digging in there further and pulling the awesome facts. I love seeing high fan attendance on there even during our leaner years, especially against the forever VILLAINS BYU    Truly a must read for Pokes hoops fans. Wish it was more current but I was stoked to find it so easily this morning and post it here.

Damn now that I look further I was at some of these games listed in here. I remember that horrible loss to BYU in 03 the 3rd highest attended game. AA was rocking, but we lost. Some dude tossed a can of chew from somewhere at the refs. We did get a little hosed that game. I think Bailey was out and we really struggled without him. I was like 4th row student section and was pretty dejected after that one. Oh the memories.

I was debating whether to use this or the other video in my let's reminisce thread. Good stuff!

I love when Adams kneed Collette in the back of the head while put-back jamming over him in the tourney. Incredible play.

Also, when I think of Hankerson (I'm convinced he was injured pretty bad) sucking so hard for pretty much the whole season and then coming up huge in the tournament I get warm fuzzies.

UPDATE
So the media guide is super comprehensive. I didn't know it was this thorough every year, hats off to them! Up to date and awesome. Here is our current history and everything you need to know about the tradition heading into this season including last seasons stats thrown into the mix.

GO POKES!!!

Someone needs to update that video recapping the season. Throw in some footage of Nance being drafted by the Lakers in it.

Get a FULL recap of what happened this past season.
