A lot of good things last night

We lost -- I get it. Everybody's pissed.

But I saw a LOT of good things last night.

1. Very crisp passing and ball movement resulted in 18 assists.
2. I've always known Sobey was a shooter and he stepped up and proved it. If we can get a point guard that can recognize a hot hand and get him the ball as instant offense off the bench, he could be good for about 4 buckets a game and more when he's on fire like last night.
3. Cooke played well when he was in and I think he will just continue to improive and improve.

4. Gilmore is senior and we won't have to put up with his ball-hoggish piss-poor shooting much longer.

This was step forward game, even though they lost.

agreed, need to man up and make a run in the tourney!!! plus if we do get CBI, CIT or NIT all the more playing time the better for our Young Pokes!!!

I totally agree. They (minus Gilmore) played well.
I can not wait to have Grabau and Adams being the only small guards on the court. I am sure that Hankerson gets the starting job over Sobey, next year but if Sobey can keep improving maybe he takes the job from Adams, or maybe he comes in to relieve Adams. If Sobey can step up to a constant 10 points a game, then we will be dangerous next season.

Sobey doesn't have the defensive skills to start, IMO, but he can play a role like Brett McFall used to. Come is with set plays to screen him for open outside shots for instant offense. His defensive issues are why, IMO, he hasn't gotten more PT. Don't forget that next year we also have a freshman PG coming in that is a true point guard. We'll be very deep at small guard and still thin on the front line. That's where I'm hoping Keonta Vernon can step in and start.

Vernon won't start next season.
Larry Nance, and Cooke will probably get it. Then Haldorson and Vernon will come in and provide some help.
I have a feeling that Vernon will be the "New Boss".
I just don't know when it will be, I seriously doubt freshman or sophomore year. But if he is the "New Boss" as a freshman, you can guarantee that he is going to NBA.

It's hard for a lot of us to see through the loss, but I too saw some good things last night.

Offense was better than it's been in a looong time. The cumulative effect of losing Martinez, illness to key players, and lingering injuries was too much for this team to overcome. Maybe they're starting to shake that off, and get back to "normal." Sure would be nice as we finish up MWC play. It's too much to hope this team gets hot and makes a run at the MWC tourney, and we'd be one and done in the dance even if we did. With an upset or two (CSU, maybe one game in the tourney), I think we're a solid NIT team, and could make a deep run. That experience will be invaluable for the young guys in a year or two.

My biggest issue last night was our defense. Shyatt was right when he said the game was won and lost on that side. Washington and Nance were tentative (still not 100%?), and the young guys got beat by the freaking back door too many times. Charges weren't called most of the night, but the team needs to learn to stop trying them when they aren't being called (Nance).

Bottom line was the offense was better, but the defense wasn't what it's been all year. If we can put that all together, we have a distant outside shot at pulling the upset in the Pit, and a good shot at the Lammies at home.

GO POKES!

The ONLY downfall on Vernon is his free-throw shooting. He is abysmal at shooting the freebie. If I'm the coach that is going to make me go nuts. If you want to be a solid contributor, you need to be a triple threat. Inside, Outside and Freebies. Especially the feebies. The clock ain't running and you have an open uncontested shot.

The thing about McFall was he was a sparkplug. He would come off the bench and not only fire up the crowd, but the team either through his intensity, shooting or a great ally-oop to Adams. If Sobey could somehow fill that kind of role, it would be a big benefit.

I think Sobey will be coming off the bench next season, but IDK for sure. I would love for to be a huge 3 point threat
