A little distraction. Thoughts on Prop 1

Niobrara County and Hot Springs County were the most against Prop 1. They are about the most republican and rural counties in Wyoming.

Lincoln County was the only county in favor.

That speaks to the demographics of each county. Many Lincoln county people are independently wealthy who are recent move ins who don’t give a darn about the local community or state in general.

I find it telling that the population of Lincoln county is basically exploding yet their high school never gets any larger. Means to me that it’s not families moving there

The vote gave me a lot of encouragement about the voter population in Wyoming. They are much more wise than the billionaire backers of the Freedom Caucus and its cast of looney tunes/moon landing denial characters would believe.

The conservative population saw through this attempt to cast property taxes (which have been in existence before Wyoming was even a state and are enshrined in the wyoming constitution) as a means of government control. When in fact, conservative ideals have long been about preventing state and federal overreach and instead allowing for local decision which is exactly what property taxes accomplish by putting the money in the hands of the folks at the local level.

Lusk and Thermopolis did a lot to save their towns by rejecting this. And I’m happy for that. Those towns are gems.

Hot springs county actually basically already was gutted by the recent property tax relief measures in the recent years. They have an old population and many citizens took advantage of those exemptions. Tax revenues were decreased so much that many local programs like 4H went away altogether and they had to go to a four day school week to reduce costs to make ends meet.
