A Huskers experience

Got back from our trip to Wyoming late on Sunday and was very tired from a long weekend. Thought I would share some of our thoughts on the game and the trip to Wyoming. This could get a little long but I will try and keep it as brief as possible.

Overall it was a very enjoyable trip. We stayed in Fort Collins and arrived there around 1:00 Friday afternoon. We went up to Estes and spent a great day seeing the sites and enjoying the town. On game day we left Fort Collins at 8:30 and took 287 to Laramie. A very enjoyable and scenic drive. Loved seeing all of the Antelope and we were impressed by the size of the snow fences. You must get a little bit of the white stuff up there.

After arriving in Laramie we started to drive around looking for a spot to tailgate. We saw some Husker fans already set up in a lot next to the baseball fields at 22nd and Harney so we pulled in there and parked. It was early (10:00 or so) so we decided to go for a walk around campus and see if we could find the bookstore. You have a very nice campus and the people we ran into were very friendly. Looks like a lot of construction going on to improve your already nice campus. While walking around a student came by and he asked if he could help us find something. He gave us directions to the bookstore and we chatted as we walked for a ways until he came to where he was going. Very friendly and helpful young man (a contrast to what we ran into later).

You have a very nice student center and we enjoyed shopping in the bookstore. My wife bought some Wyoming t-shirts for the kids and others in our group bought things as well. Everyone was very friendly to us and the other Nebraska fans I the store.

A side note here. We all could really feel the altitude almost immediately upon arriving. A little light headedness and just walking around made you a little winded. It also seemed very dry. I can’t tell you how much water we went through (as well as adult beverages). It was a good thing that there were porta potties by where we parked as well.

Now we move on to the only negative experience during the whole trip. A person in our party looked at a map in the student center and thought they figured out a shorter route back to where we parked. We would go down 15th street to E. Harney then head east to our lot. When we were about a block from E. Harney a bunch of what we figure were students (and most likely already partying) started yelling obscenities at us from the balcony of their apartment on the corner of 15th and Harney. My wife was shocked to learn that I and my nephew were gay and that we do some very vulgar things. I know these were just drunk kids, but there was really no reason to be shouting the things they did and with a women present. My made a comment about how they would like it if someone was saying those things to their mother. We decided to take the nearest turn east since we feared if we got any closer they would come down and confront us and we did not want to get assaulted. We turned at E. Gibbon St. and quickly moved out of site from them. I have to say that I was honestly in fear that they would come down and run up the hill to confront us. We said nothing back to them and I believe only one person in our group just waved at them as we walked away. We could hear them for some time yelling obscenities at any Husker fans that happened to drive by that corner. It was the only disappointment during an otherwise perfect trip.

The rest of the afternoon was fantastic. The weather was perfect and the Wyoming fans we ran into in the lot were a lot of fun to talk to. When it came time to go to the game we had an enjoyable walk to the stadium and didn’t have to wait in line very long at all to get in. One funny thing happened while in line, a guy dressed in a big can (cowboy Ken I believe) went in in front of us and some of the Wyoming fans seemed a bit embarrassed by him. I thought it was pretty darn funny. I do hope he has something on under there.
We didn’t arrive early enough to get a funnel cake as suggested by someone on your board, but we did get some fantastic kettle Corn. The game itself was fairly typical of our team this year. We start of slow and make mistakes but turn it around in the second half. Your cowboys played very well and with a lot of heart. I believe that if your guys can get up for the rest of your games like they did for us you could very well be bowl bound this year.

So all in all we had a fantastic road trip to Wyoming. Everyone in our group said we would come back again if we ever have the opportunity. We also all agreed that given the monetary considerations Nebraska will probably not ever schedule another away game at Wyoming, which is too bad really.

Sorry about the length of this post, but I thought you would be interested in hearing about our experience. Thanks again for all of the information and we hope that some of you will make the trip to Lincoln in 2013. And just ignore any of our drunk students that may heckle you on your visit, because we all have them.

The wording if that sentence made me laugh.

Glad to hear you had a nice trip to the Rocky Mountain front this weekend, glad you were mostly treated well and enjoyed yourself.

It is worse than "too bad". It is a travesty. The BCS / NCAA is on a one-way path of destroying college football.

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself, huskernation! All the Nebraska fans I ran into seemed to be saying the same things. I'm glad to hear we represented our University well, and apologize for the drunken assholes that always seem to be around. I'll definitely be in Lincoln for the game in a few years, and I know that I'll enjoy my trip as much as you did :thumb:

What the heck my post didn't post. I blame my phone. Anyway condensed version. Glad you enjoyed yourself. Sorry for the unprovoked heckling, I usually only see it after a fan or player provokes it. I was 2 rows behind NU bench and did not hear or see anything like that from any neb fans or players. I am glad NU kneeled at the end of the game, even trying to punch it in could have cause issues.

All the neb fans I encountered were nice, which is good because I can get hot under the collar if I feel someone is attacking wyo people, students, players, fans, or coaches.

Kudos to neb, well done.

@ McPeachy, I am always happy when you post because I can't take my eyes off your Avatar. It's really a wonderful display of what the human body is capable of.

I was lurking over on the other WYO board and there are some really bitter posters over there. This board seems much more civilized. I am sure glad I don't go through life with such bitterness and what seems to be outright hatred towards others. Don't get me wrong, I can get pretty nasty at times, but it has to be very well deserved. Anyway, I have really enjoyed my time on your board and I may check in from time to time. Especially after you take care of those boys at Boise State. In the past, some of the teams we have beaten that are not expected to have great seasons go on to win some very big games and do much better than expected. I sincerely hope that from here on out your results column is filled with W's!

I believe there was more provocation from Nebraska trolls earlier in the week. Got the old timers fired up. Most of the Gowyogo folks can't be pleased. Wyoming could have crushed Nebraska and they would have been bitching about something.

They are very much like the old man that used to chase us down the alley when we knocked over his trash cans.
