A "good" football season

The general consensus seems to be that the upcoming football season should be a good one. It appears people feel like this years team will continue from last years 9-4 team because of the continuity of the coaching staff and players. I get that fans of any given team are pretty optimistic every preseason...but with the O/U on wins for Wyoming at 6.5 most everywhere for betting purposes, that optimism seems misplaced. I suppose it's possible that a "good season" means different things to some folks...

So...this is a two part question. Why should this upcoming season be a good one? And what is the break point between good and bad?

For me...I don't think the 2024 should be a good season. I think it's possible, but a new coach and a new QB leave too much room for uncertainty. In Bohl's last season, he got to 9 wins. I think it is very unlikely that Wyoming matches that win total next year. As far as what makes a "good" season....I think for Wyoming it changes from year to year. It's not like we are BSU and to not make the championship or win it is a disappointment. For next year to be "good" ... I'll take a border war victory (on the road...not easy)...and 7 total wins. Now...that isn't a season that lights the world on fire but it's barely out of the "bad" category for me.
 
I'd be happy with a CSU win, an AFA revenge win, and a bowl game. All this with a new coach and young QB would be great.

That AFA game last year was a real heart breaker.
 
I want a MWC championship

I will be happy with 9 wins


Looking at the schedule, my rose glasses can see a W every week. Couple wrinkles to open up the offense slightly and play tough D, could be in every game for the W. Worst loss last year was B(not a state)SU then TX. TX game was close for the majority of the game.

Last year, (and years past) way too many games not hitting 250+ or even 200+ yds passing. Couple wrinkles is all. Being able to adapt to what works best in a game helps too.
 
5 wins or fewer is bad unless something like a bunch of injuries.

6-7 wins? Just ok unless winless against byu, csu, af, and bsu.

8+ wins good
 
I think the reason many fans expect a "good season" is because most believe we gained a lot and only lost a little from a 9 win team last year. The defensive side of the ball was a strong unit last year, and we didn't lose a whole lot of players from it. Gibbs is obviously an exception, but I think a lot of people feel Shae can fill in there adequately. On the offensive side of the ball, we have a RB unit that is loaded with talent and depth. We added DJ Jones, whom has the skills to be an all-MWC performer and we will get McNeely back full-strength at some point. WR unit should be better. We lose Asante and Wieland, but there are some signs to suggest that the freshman class may have some big time playmakers in it - particularly Chris Durr Jr. Having even a single playmaking receiver that can consistently win in one on one coverage changes things significantly and really opens up options for the offense. O-line lost some proven starters but most feel we have the depth here to not see a significant drop off. Of course, the elephant in the room is QB play. All signs point to the coaching staff really believing that Svoboda is the real deal. When they came out and named Svoboda the starting QB in the spring, it became clear that they believe they have a generational talent at their fingertips and do not want to lose him. If this turns out to be true, the sky is the limit for this team.

As far as what constitutes a "good season", I would say it is a minimum of 9 wins. If all of the above is true, then we should be able to at least match last years win total.
 
I see a good season as 9+ wins in regular season. New coach or not, this cupboard was far from empty coming into 2024. I think last year's team under-achieved significantly on the road, and this team should have their hair on fire. This year, all the tough teams are in Laramie. Now is time to pick off BYWho, but North Texas could be a tricky game. If they can get a W in ABQ instead of being snake-bitten by UNM, the sky should be the limit for this team. Have thought about this question for about a week now, and finally settled on 3 losses would be good for this team. While anything over 6 wins would be okay for me personally, I think this team has a whole lot of potential to shock a lot of people. I may just have my B/G glasses on, and this could be a 3 win team, but I just have a feeling...this team SHOULD be amazing! That is the beauty of sports, everyone has the chance to be 0-0 and wonder "what if." We are lucky to have that opportunity, and thankful to all be Cowboys!
 
Historically the D kept The Pokes in a lot of games. I believe the defense will be as strong as we’ve seen. Bertagnole coming back says a lot about how Sawvel is respected. I can’t believe with more of a passing offense, and the rbs we have, there isn’t more offensive production. Personally, a trick play in some situations would be cool. 9 wins and I’d be happy, which I think will happen. Especially if there is Ws against BYU, goat U, and Boise.
 
Until we prove we can win what should be winnable P5 games on the road (ASU), consistently beat G5 teams on the road (UNT), and beat the upper tier of the conference (Boise), I can't help but think we are a paper tiger that will plod along with between 6-8 wins per season and end up in a middlin' bowl game. Many on this board are perfectly content with such a result - but it doesn't suggest that we will be in a championship hunt. I am concerned about the OC - as I have friends that were very close to the MSU program and said that he was a train wreck. The D will be fine. I'm a bit worried about special teams - we have to have a punter that can flip the field and a head coach that doesn't put our kicker into horrible positions, which in turn puts our D in bad positions when we miss kicks. Bohl's misplaced confidence in Red Shoes last year - when he was clearly struggling and not right - cost us several games.

I am confident that we will beat Idaho, Utah State and New Mexico. The rest we will likely split wins and losses. I say we go somewhere between 6-6 and 8-4. Very Bohl-esque.

I am usually not one to judge a season by one game, but that ASU game very well may be the bellwether for how our season will go.

In my opinion, if we are a top 3 MWC team, we win that ASU game. It doesn’t have to be pretty or perfect, but we need to leave Tempe with a W. A loss in that ASU game is a very poor prognosticator for the rest of the season.
 
I think this team has a chance at being the best offensive team since the first year with Josh. The problem with that year was the defense was terrible. I don't think that will be the case this year.

if they can find a playmaker or two at wide receiver and feed J-Mike a lot of opportunities, this could become a special season.

I would be okay with 7 wins, but this is the most excited that I have been for an offense since the 2nd year having Josh.

The issue is that with their transfers and roster turnover ASU is an even bigger wildcard than this Wyoming team. Their floor could be the worst team in P5, and their ceiling could be ???

The only way i'll be concerned is if we get our doors blown off. Any other result and I think we'll need a few more weeks to judge where this team is.

If we get smoked by ASU, we should be concerned. My point is that these are games we need to win to take the next step towards being considered a "good" team (same with BYU). Good teams win these sorts of games and beat the doors off of teams like North Texas. Middlin' teams celebrate moral victories and settle in for the New Mexico and Arizona (or whatever it is now) Bowls.
