A few calls in the SDSU game...Refs and Coaching

I watched the game again after I got home last night, and the officiating certainly didn't help us much. They completely swallowed their whistles for the first 10 minutes of the second half (one foul per team).
In that time period
#1 Hankerson got fouled on a layup, should have been an and-one.
#2 Cooke got hammered across the arm and face going up for a dunk, no call.
#3 Hankerson had an SDSU player climb over his back for the rebound and knock the ball out of bounds, and not only was there no foul call, they gave the ball to SDSU.
#4 Nance got pushed halfway across the court with no call, and got called for a travel.

A few calls one way or the other in a game like this make a big difference, and the refs certainly made a difference. After that first 10 minutes with no whistles, it became a total foul-fest, taking away any potential momentum or rhythm.

The other critical stretch was from 4 minutes to go down to 2 minutes. It is a two possession game and We either foul or give up an offensive rebound on four straight missed shots. I thought we should have had either Cooke or Hankerson or both in there for defense instead of J-Mac and Herndon.

Then, to compound it, we are down five with about 20 seconds to go, and I think it is a no-brainer that we need a "3" at this point. Instead, either Grabau or Adams goes pinballing down the lane and doesn't get a good shot.

SDSU certainly has us outmatched athletically at a few (most) positions, but we certainly had every opportunity to win this one. We made some poor decisions, had some calls go against us, and SDSU played very well, and we still had a chance. That makes it feel more like "one that got away" stomach punch than if we had gave it our best shot and still lost.

The game was reffed like an NCAA tournament game. Some people have felt in the past the MW officials did a poor job of preparing our teams for tournament play in that in the tournament they generally let you play a little more physical. There were a lot of calls that if I was a SDSU fan I would've said fouls should have been called on Wyoming. Sure there were some bad/missed calls, but in general I think it was a pretty balanced night from them and generally they let them play.

Sort of. It seems like, though, that they were letting them play when it was to SDSU's advantage, and letting it go when it would have gave us an advantage.

Just the breaks, I guess.

Can't recall #1. #2 I thought was a foul too. #3 was a big one, I couldn't believe there was no foul on that one, or at the very least a pity out of bounds to UW in lieu of the foul.

I remember #4 and I have to disagree. I rewound my DVR and watched that play 2 or 3 times. I think it was the right call. If there was contact as Nance was moving it wasn't enough to warrant a foul call, and by the time there was enough contact Nance had already traveled. In fact, if you watch that play closely again, Nance travels once, gets away with it, and then travels again and gets called.

Always tough with NCAA officiating. You never know what your gonna get. Usually it swings in the home team's favor in tune to about 5 points. We didn't really get that kind of officiating last night and yeah maybe it went SDSU's way a little maybe a tad. I can't blame that on the refs at all. We had too many other things well under our control were we failed last night.

I'll have to go back and watch it again, I guess.

It seems like they had Nance on roller skates all night. He never could establish position and was getting pushed outside all night. Some big physical players on that team, and Nance needed to get rid of the ball quicker when the double- and triple-teams came at him.

One other thing. Guess what happens when you pound the rock inside the paint or to the post? You start to get more calls as you become the aggressor. Did we look like the aggressor to you last night at all? When we did we often had the swat squad come in with some fucking nasty, ferocious blocks. That one were the SDSU player spiked it into the floor and outta bounds was filthy.

Our ball movement was a HUGE problem. We didn't figure it out till it was well too late. When we kicked it into Nance down low it was double team city. He has to kick it out, we whip it around to the open guy who in turn has to nail the shot. We weren't playing like this at all for long stretches of that game. SDSU's D is HUGE part of this sure, but we needed to stay the course for what works for us. It's frustrating sometimes and this is one of THOSE games.

They didn't do us any favors (the refs that is). But we absolutely picked the wrong game to play at our worst...well maybe not. Maybe we play our worst game against SJSU again, and still get the W?

If I were Shyatt, after seeing the SDSU defense for 20 minutes...I would have contemplated going McClain style - and put Riley & Josh on the line the entire second half.

Good teams, that are well coached, will take from this and learn, grow, and ultimately become a better basketball team.

Go Pokes!

Thank you. Finally some one sees the light. Every conceivable instance where a foul could have been called on us it was. Many times, like when you've stated and more, we simply did not get the calls. The refs let them play jungle ball in the first 13 min of the second half. Larry was getting mugged every time he touched it, plus off the ball they were basically bear hugging him. It's ridiculous.

The lack of fouls is a big deal because a HUGE part of our success has been due to our good FT shooting. Take that away and we are not as good.

Whatever. I'm not blaming the loss on the refs, but I will say that if it had been called more evenly it would have been a one-possession game.

I blame the loss on

1. Stupid TOs. 5 second twice?? are you kidding me? That's jr. high stuff.

2. Not handling the press well. Everyone clear the f out and let Reilly or Josh bring it up. It's not a hard concept.

3. Getting ass kicked on the glass. Got to get tougher.

4. Outside shooting. Larry got doubled hard every time in the second half and we can't make them pay. Until we can make teams pay for doubling Larry we won't reach our potential. J Adams needs to be more assertive, earlier.

Even with the shitty officiating we could have and should have won the game. It's never a good idea to leave it in the hands of the refs like we did.

We'll come back stronger and more focused, Go Pokes. Beat Fresno!

it's a mixed bag for me, they seemed to favor SDSU in the 2nd half more, but we weren't doing the things that warrant us to get to line itself as well. We do need to get more aggressive and take it to the hole and force them to get a call or not, yes we do better when we get to the line for the most part, we cannot be one dimensional or teams will take away our only true scorer then what. Remember we can win if we don't score the basketball, besides if we start getting other teams in foul trouble that can only do wonders for us. Fresno scares me but I think if we come out and control what we want to do, i think we'll get our first (and much needed) win in Fresno, yet another big game on the horizon, going into a week break b4 we face the Lobos in Laramie Jan 24...cmon Pokes, lots to tweak and get better at!!

We have got to learn from this and overcome this kind of play and officiating, because I guarantee this is what we will see in the tourney.

Worse  Wait until we meet the lowly rebels. Refs treatment to opposing teams in those games make Bill Cosby look like a gentleman.

Grabau's foul late in the 2nd half where he was boxing out and got whistled was pretty ridiculous.

That said, this is the first time I've gotten to watch the Pokes play this year.. they're a lot of fun to watch.

I forgot about that shit call. Ok yeah so there were probably at least 3 pretty shit calls against us no doubt, I still think we needed to hold up more on our end of the bargain.
