A Couple Quick Things....

So the game Saturday/Sunday was kind of a blur of up and down emotion and a lot of the game was overshadowed by the craziness after 2 AM.

I sat down and watched the game again today (thanks Cuttslam) and came away with a few takeaways:

1. Josh Allen is a beast.
Watching the game again today, he made a ton of throws that, through the benefit of replay, were quite remarkable. Small windows, locations only his guy could catch them, and holy hell, there was steam coming off of some of them. He looks legit.

Oh, and he can run and dance and juke. He's a playmaker.

2. Granderson is a beast
Seriously. I didn't notice it as much live, but he was every where. He only had a handful of tackles and the one sack, but he was disrupting plays constantly. He was in every play it seemed. It is amazing seeing his growth from last season to now. He's on his way to be special.

3. Our Defense Won't (Shouldn't*) Be A Liability This Season
This defense, at times looked downright stout. Tons of guys making the transition from new freshmen boys to straight up men. Wingard is ridiculous, Wacha looks vastly improved, and Gafford and Epps look like GREAT additions. Really excited to see this team match up against Nebraska and BSU.

4. Cooper Rothe Will Win Us A Lot of Games
This kid can kick. He made as many FGs in that game as we did all last year... Think about that. 2 FG, 6 points, was all our kicking game produced last year.... I can ignore the misses, he is young and was clearly out thinking himself. He will be good.

I am very cautiously optimistic about this season going forward. I still have my B&G Goggles on tight but truly believe this team will be above .500 this season and expect the Pokes to make some noise in conference.

There is a lot to be optimistic about, but college football is a week-to-week game. Last week on the Hawaii message boards, new HC Nick Rolovich was poised to be better than June Jones. It's a lock. Magnificent offensive display vs. Pac-12 competition. Diverse and entertaining, talent seemingly everywhere.

Then they get killed by Michigan and now he's a bum. Life comes at you fast.

NIU is a good win vs. a consistent program. One of the few from the G5 to make a major bowl game. That said, let's try to remember we beat them coming off a bowl game in which they were beaten more severely than any team in the history of college football.

Instant classic? Absolutely....but let's not make like Wyoming just beat Houston or something. That's a middle-tier MW team. Hell, maybe not even that. They barely beat UNLV at home last season too IIRC. I think Wyoming will finish 6-6 or 7-5, but we've fallen victim to being prisoners of the moment before.

Hitting 6 should be the goal IMO.
We may end up getting out to a fast start, simply because the schedule is softer in the first 5 than any other time throughout the season.
I think Wyo can get to a 4-1 start, and at least get some excitement back.
I don't expect a win Saturday, but I think Wyo should beat UC-Davis and EMU, along with a great chance to beat the sheep.
Finding two more wins the rest of the season may be difficult though.

Assuming you're right, Beav, after a win against AFA we'll be 5-1 to start the season. I'm penciling in a loss to Nebraska for obvious reasons...I can see at least two wins in the last 6 games both from the state of Nevada...UNLV and Reno.

I'll be happy at 7-5 but would love to see a 10+ win season and us FINALLY beating Smurf State!!!

NIU had a big OL and our DL line handled them fairly well. Their secondary was no slouch either and our WRs were able to get enough separation at times for JA to get the ball to them. One thing about our game with Nebraska though, don't look for the PI calls to help us out in this one. I have not been worried about our offense at all for this season, and after this last game, I think our defense will hold it's own pretty well. I wonder if Bohl will slip Conway in a couple of times for sweeps - I think he is fast enough.

Yes, better than last year. But - way too optimistic way too soon. Remember a LOT of the Poke movement downfield on NIU was because of interference penalties on plays that probably wouldn't have been completed anyway. That's not going to happen that much in the future.

On the flip side will the cowboys be called for the holding calls that slowed drives? On the last one late in the game, linebacker from right side was just thrown out of the play by the right tackle I believe. Holding was called since he was "wrestled" to the ground. RT just put an arm on him and threw him. So PI's helped, but hopefully less holding calls.

Josh Allen has a cannon for an arm. He struggled with setting his feet to throw which caused a lot of his throws to be a little off. He's an NFL prospect simply due to his arm and legs. He could be an early round prospect if he improves his footwork on his throws and his ability to manipulate the pocket.

The defense is so much more physical than they were last year and seem faster. Discipline certainly helps with that. May looked like he knew where to be all night which wasn't the case last year. Wingard is a special talent. The line was stout. There were mistakes, but the defense is significantly improved from last year.

After watching the YouTube replay........I realized that Bohl has successfully developed a system that can take advantage of our elevation

How long has it been since we've seen opponents getting sick on the sidelines?

Not only on the sidelines, but number 6 was puking on the field right in front of us! lol

After watching the replay...three things stuck out for me

1. JA's release is lightning fast along with the velocity of the ball coming out of his hand. He will be able to make plays that we haven't seen from a QB in a long, long time.

2. 2 ST returns for TD that were called back. When was the last time we had 1 return on ST regardless of flag or not?

3. The number of D-holding penalties / PA calls against a team that has one of the best secondary players in the country. Indicates that our receiver had them beat and they were forced to hold/interfere to avoid a big play.

Alright, 4 things....

4. Our overall speed on D is surprising. Watch how fast our guys collapse onto a play is encouraging. The pursuit is much improved and the number of guys around the ball is noticable.

Still had a couple of "oh crap" moments on defense, but pretty much all of those came from that one receiver, who was essentially their offense.

It was nice too that most of them were of the 20-30 yard variety rather than the 40-50 yard plays we gave up last year

Pretty much. The guy was good. He was covered pretty well on his long TD. But, Hull didn't turn around and #19 made a nice catch. He was also accountable for about half their running yards on his end arounds. But, our D was stout against the run most of the night.

Need to clean some things up, but the improvement is there. That game shouldn't have been as close as it was.

Go Pokes!

I agree. Reading on the NIU board there are some pretty pathetic excuses. (late start, phantom pass interference calls etc.) They were having a really hard time staying with Gentry. You'll notice that they were holding calls more than anything...and that's because they couldn't keep up. a good sign. We had a number of chances to get a larger lead on them, but due to stupid penalties we weren't able to do it. We were the better team and we deserved to win that game.

I still can't get over how much faster and athletic we look on defense. a total surprise for me. I was expect many broken coverages but i only recall about 3 or so? Galloday is an absolute beast.

I thought our defensive line and linebackers were fantastic sprinting to the ball and making good tackles. We didn't have a ton of missed tackles which also surprised me.

Can someone set me straight on the penalty on the punt. (not the bone head Granderson one). We ran into the kicker and we had the penatly added onto the end of the kick? Why were they not given a 1st down???

I am now hopeful that we can improve on that performance against a much better team in lincoln. Time will tell, but overall was really excited about the progress that we have made. This is exactly what I was hoping for. We are still a work in progress, but there is definite progress. I can't wait for saturday! GO POKES!

I got you, fam. It was running into the kicker, not roughing the kicker. The yardage wouldn't have been enough for a 1st down. NIU was given the option to take the penalty yardage and re-kick, or add it to the end of the play. They had a pretty good outcome on the kick so they just added it on.

Personally, I thought we were incredibly lucky that it wasn't roughing.

We were able to stay in Man coverage almost all night. That is a huge advantage on defense as it allows a great deal more run support from the safeties and linebackers.

Despite Galloday getting his numbers (I think he'll do that a lot this year), we still covered him well enough to justify staying with the man coverage almost all night.

If these corners can keep that up, we might be OK.
