5 Things I Think- Week 2 Edition [Wyonation Blog]

I agree about special teams. So much better.

To me special teams is an indicator of overall talent on the team, especially young talent. We returned great, yes, but I'm more excited about how we covered. There were guys flying around making plays - these are the future safties, LBs, WRs and RBs of the Cowboys - and they look like players.

If we just clean up, on all 3 phases, we'll do a lot better. Several of our drives sputtered due to holding, or special teams beaming the punter. Twice.

There were a few mistakes in coverage (open receivers) that I saw which Coach Bohl will be all over getting corrected this week. They are easily corrected. Also the penalties will probably be far fewer - I'm pretty sure we had over 100 yards in penalties. Those two things will help. A lot of it was first game jitters, but confidence and a win will help with this.

I think the Pokes are still vulnerable to the big play on the pass. Not so much on the run this year though. Nebraska, mainly a ground team, will exploit the secondary's big play pass weakness.

For the cowboys to have a shot they'll have to try it through the air against true freshman, former 5 star corner Lamar Jackson. He was beaten once against Fresno, but seemed to bounce back well. This is the spot Wyoming will try to exploit via play action if they can get any sort of ground game going.

The other wildcard is special teams vs. special teams. A big return against the huskers could shift momentum. The punter is a true freshman and had a rough first outing.

Agree, 100% Cowboy. I think one other thing we need is a little luck regarding injuries. Either avoid them or have a team that is able to embrace the "next man up" does the job mentality.
There's been quite a bit of talk this week about how much stronger, faster and technically sound we seem to be this year. I haven't heard a lot of credit being given to Strength Coach Russell Dennison for that. Sure, having "more birthdays" helps, but I think he's been a large part also.

If I remember right, most players credit coach Denison and I think a few did in the post game interviews

Absolutely, Coach Russell Dennison deserves a great deal of credit in helping the UW Cowboys reach the next level. Also a well conditioned athlete will have fewer injuries - can't prevent them all, but sure helps.

Wyoming has a shot up the got with their RB it's maybe the only place where they have the advantage, and they'll need a pick or two.

What's going to be extremely hard to stop is NU's fly sweep utilizing (back in action) Brandon Reilly and Alonzo Moore. Both have speed to spare and both have a propensity for home run plays. The NU receiving corp is among the best at the University and probably the best in the B1G.

Good to know the receivers that we'll be seeing on Saturday are better than the school's intramural champs in flag football

As I posted yesterday:

"I think the Pokes are still vulnerable to the big play on the pass. Not so much on the run this year though. Nebraska, mainly a ground team, will exploit the secondary's big play pass weakness."

It doesn't matter how good the NU receivers are. Even the intramural receivers can beat the fatal flaw of this years Pokes - the secondary. Unfortunately, unless things get fixed real fast, that translates into a best 4-8 season.
