5 Things I Think: Week 11 Edition [Wyonation Blog]

Good read! I think you hit it spot on with your report. The Cowboys are in control of their own destiny this season and only time will tell if they can stand up to the test. The future is looking pretty bright for this team though!!

Another good note: I have been thoroughly impressed with the way backups have came out and competed this season. Our depth is getting better and I don't see that changing for the foreseeable future.

I agree the depth is really starting to take shape. Jolly has been solid on the OL, the DE''s have proven they can play, and the secondary has capable guys that can step in. That has been refreshing

Absolutely. Something we didn't have last year, or really even the year before that ('ol Bohly's first year).

I'm not sure I'd call May the most important player on Defense. I think that title goes to Wingard. He just seems to be everywhere. May was also out for the UC Davis game and we weren't talking about what an important piece he was then. Of course it may be that he was the most important piece against Utah State, I could buy into that.

A pleasant surprise is how someone has stepped up whenever an important cog has gone down. I thought we were finished after Granderson was lost.

While Wingard is racking up a crazy amount of tackles and he's seemingly everywhere, he also misses tackles and misreads plays more often. I get that he'll get better and that he's only a sophomore, though.

What makes May so valuable is that he often hits the player in the gap, limiting the gain on runs. This gets us the stops we need to force punts. Wingard's stops are more often of the variety "okay, at least it's not a touchdown," even though he certainly limits gains at times as well. May averaging about 7 tackles a game (he missed the UC Davis game and obviously didn't play long vs Utah State) is really nice.

Maybe it's just me, though, but I'd rather have our linebackers racking up tackles than our safeties. :P

Having played safety myself, I agree that we'd rather have LB's making tackles than safeties. However, the coaches have been on record as saying they are using Wingard closer to the line and in more/different ways than most safeties are used and to take advantage of his aggressiveness. While I agree he has missed some tackles, I won't agree that he has some missed reads unless I know what his read and assignment is on a particular play.

Yes. Wingard is not tackling as well this year. Last year he was tackling the legs and thighs. This year he's trying to knock people out up high. He does occasionally and I cringe because it only encourages him to continue his bad technique. He's been missing tackles here and there because he's not wrapping up. Wingard needs to tackle the legs, again! He's still damn good, though.

While we're on this subject...

I'd actually like to see Wingard move to LB next year. Prosser, too. I get the feeling that true freshman Haliburton is going to be a stud and can play a mean safety.

Wingard can take May's spot and Prosser can take Wacha's. Wingard and Prosser can run damn well and imo would make awesome LBs

Interesting thought. I wouldn't be too surprised if at least one of them did move into a role like that.

They definitely have the ability to do that. I will be interested to see how many lbs our entire team can put on this off season and see how that affects them positionally. If Wingard were to gain another 20 lbs like he did from last season to this, he could be a great LB. It depends on the off season really.

My reasoning for May being the most important player on defense is for a few different things. One is his versatility and that he is arguably the most athletic guy on the field any given play, his speed alone makes plays by itself. I never said May was our best defender, that is Wingard, but the versatility of May opens up so many different things on D and offenses have to know where he is because he could line up anywhere on the field. He can sit back, blitz and cover.

I think May is our best defender. He's our fastest and surest tackler. I would say Granderson is #2 and Wingard is #3 if I had to rate them.
