#4 UNLV vs. #5 Wyoming

Boy, what could have been this season if Nance hadn't blown out his knee. I wish I knew why God hates the Wyoming Cowboys.

What a game! Great job Pokes! We may not have got the win, but it sure as hell wasn't for lack of effort.

Damn proud of this team with Nance I think we would've ended the season as a 3 seed and shocked people. With him in this game we absolutely would have won. It sucks he got snubbed on DPOY when he is clearly the best defender in the league and I'm actually really excited about seeing this team next year.

We could potentially still find a CBI bid but I somewhat doubt it.

Now over to the Football forum to marvel at Brett Smiths Pro day results!

Yeah. Too bad Nance went down. With him on the floor, I think we would have won. :(

Hankerson would have at least been able to give our guys a rest, but no, he had to be stupid and do the thing with drugs. :tickedoff:

But for the rest of the team, they played their hearts out with limited depth.

Wyoming sure could use a little more guard depth. This year Grabau's legs burned out down the stretch. Two years ago it was Martinez. With a little more depth in the back court our guys shooting percentage might hold up through the season.

At least these Cowboys make me proud even when we lose. You have to love heart and effort.

Go Pokes!!

+1

Hopefully they get into a tourney and win 2 games to get to 20.

Very proud of these guys. Very gutsy game. Wish Granberry , Sobey, and Adams played like they have recently all season. Next year, if/when Nance returns will be a good year for us (yeah, yeah, I know we are always waiting on next year...flame away haters).

Can't shoot 7-14 at the line and expect to win. Also that dumb 3 attempt by Sobey with 22 seconds left sealed the loss.

These kids put up one hell of a fight. They had every reason to pack it in and they didn't. Proud to be a Cowboy fan.

I do wish the MWC would wake up and stop having the tourney in Vegas every year. I think it was 1984 when the WAC went to a post-season conference tournament, and they rewarded the team that won the conference regular season by allowing them to host the tourney. That gave teams a bit more incentive knowing if they won the regular season, they would host the post... Giving UNLV the home court advantage year after year after year is total bull shit.

A couple of thoughts:

1. Love that Josh Adams just destroyed the DPOY on that dunk.

2. Also love that Josh Adams, who didn't even receive All-MWC HM, was far more impressive than the player that all UNLV fans were whining was better than Larry Nance (Birch). (Note: Birch is a good player and I have nothing but respect for him. UNLV fans are just pathetic whiners about everything).

3. Josh Adams growth down the stretch is very remisicent to me of Larry Nance last year as a sophomore. Nance averaged 18/7 in the last 5 games last year and carried that momentum over to his Junior season. I expect the same from Adams who averaged 21 ppg, 4 rpg, 3 apg, 1 spg over the last 5 while shooting over 50% from the field and over 40% from beyond the arc.

4. I sure hope the Pokes get a chance to play in the post-season even if it is CBI/CIT on the road.

It's very difficult logistically for a conference with a significant fanbase to hold it on the winning teams homecourt. That means you may only get a few days to make travel plans. Particularly difficult considering the geography covered by the MWC. All the big-time conferences have set locations and Las Vegas is clearly an attractive destination (that is why other conferences hold their tourney there too).

We held it in Denver and we didn't generate close to the level of attendance that Vegas does. CSU and AFA fans did nothing to support the attendance so it was mostly WYO and UNM with some from the Utah schools.

We just need to win.

Whether or not UW gets a postseason invite is going to depend heavily on where the MWC teams with more attractive post-season resumes land. Let's assume either SDSU or UNM wins the tournament and those are the only 2 teams to make the NCAA Tournament. That leaves Nevada, Boise State, and UNLV who will almost certainly be picked for a post-season tournament in front of UW. Given that we are without Nance and have the stipulation of only being able to play away games, there is even a chance that Fresno State could be selected over UW.

Worst case scenario is that both Nevada and Boise State get skipped over for the NIT. If that happens, UW probably gets left out in the cold.

If you are hoping for the Pokes to play more games this season, you should be hoping Nevada and Boise State show well in their remaining tournament games and Fresno State doesn't upset UNM.

Agree with everything except Nevada. They are 15-16, soon to be 15-17. One game difference in the conference standings won't be enough to offset them being below .500.

UNM/SDSU - NCAA

BSU - Possibly NIT

UNLV - CBI

USU/WYO/FSU - Waiting to hear from either CBI/CIT. I assume that USU will pay the guarantee for a home game, regardless of Morrill's comments today. I wouldn't be surprised either way with Fresno and Wyoming.

UNR/SJSU/AFA/CSU - Home sweet home

I agree with the logistics issues, but that still doesn't mean that UNLV having home court is fair or the right thing to do. I know Denver was a failed experiment, but maybe the MWC needs to think outside the box. If the PAC 12 has no problem traveling to Vegas, why not have the MWC have their tourney in Seattle, or Portland, or LA, or let's get crazy - New Orleans. All of the teams have to fly in (as well as the fans) except for UNLV, so what's the big deal of flying into one of these cities. I know everyone loves a party, and I can speak from experience that I've had a few parties in all of the mentioned cities. Just saying that instead of accepting the status quo, maybe it's time to explore some other venues.

You are right. I was forgetting just how bad Nevada played to start the season.

agreed, w.t.h has Riley gone these past games w/o Larry??? Man was this a fun one to watch, I wrote them off when it was a 10 pt lead, man was I wrong, that was one of the most exciting last 2 mins of a game, really disappointing that for once we couldn't have gotten that taken care of. SDSU will kill the Rebels if they play like that today.
Thanks for a wonderful seaon Pokes, like the saying goes wait til next year!!!!

I will concur with everyone else on here. These young Pokes made me proud yesterday. What a fight! Coach Shyatt and his staff are making me proud aswell.
Who knows whether we get a post season bid anywhere, or maybe we finish at 18-14. But I truly believe this years team, regardless of being the worst record coach Shy has had here, was by far his most well rounded team yet.
And we got key players coming back:
Adams: I'm tickled to death to see what the future holds for his Jr and Sr year! I could fully see him busting out 16-18 ppg avg next year.

Grabau: I know he kind of disappeared the last few games, but he's still a reliable guard. I can see him getting his 10-13 ppg avg next year. And his ft shooting is a dream! (Kind of wondering if that injury to his hand about a month or so back has been affecting him, cause his shot was never the same after that, even his 3pt avg dropped significantly after that.)

Nance: although a ? Next year, could be anywhere from an 8-10 ppg guy or if fully healthy and not nimble on that knee back to his 15-20 ppg avg. and possibly a dbl dbl avg as well.

Cooke will make more strides between this year and next. Overall he was a 6 ppg, 6 rpg type guy this year, and I could see that being closer to 8-10 ppg and 8 rpg type guy next year.

We will more than likely have Washington, Halderson, Sellers and Bentz returning, aswell as a great recruiting class coming in. Ant let's not forget McManamen also.
I really think we have the potential to be a Hot Commodity next year! I'm ready for next November!

Also, I think playing in Vegas is fine. It's a great place where everyone travels well to. I just wish we would play in one of the other arenas, not in UNLV's home venue.
