4 down territory from here on out

down 17 with only a few ticks off in the 2nd :brick:

Despite this overall piss poor showing (that we all share the same feelings on), not going for it on 4th & 1/2 yard right out of the gate in the first quarter was deflating. What a pussy move that was...not going for it. WTF.

Similar thing happened against Texas. I have yet to figure out why DC and staff won't pull out all the stops against teams that we are out manned against. If we are going to go down 52-0 we might as well go down in flames. Long Bombs, trick plays, going for it on 4th and short, etc. It seems like the tougher the opponent the more conservative we play. Hopefully with a few more play makers the play calling will get more aggressive.

It's puzzling to me as well. We tried to line up an simply beat BYU head on. Not gonna happen! We should have played press coverage, go for interceptions, blitz, take some chances! I see us trying to play like a program who can simply go out and just beat teams with talent alone. Maybe DC isn't watching the same players we are, I don't know.

As a coach playing one of the best teams in the conference, you gotta take some chances I think.

I don't like it at this point, but I think DC is trying to set the tone for the future. Not going for it on both of those plays (Texas and BYnerU) pissed me off, but after I cooled off, I can see that if a coach believes his team will be competitive you play field position. We're not there yet, but I think DC is setting the tone for a relatively young staff and a bunch of new athletes.

Sucks for us right now, but I think DC is looking to the future and letting his staff and athletes know how to coach a game when we're finally to that point. Call me crazy, but I don't see it as "settling" anymore - I see it as building a program to get to the top.

GO POKES!

I think DC knows what players he has on the field. He has repeatedly said "We aren't that good a team yet" I don't disagree...I'm not sure I agree with the way he is saying it (not really motivating to current players) but as long as he improves the team I'll deal with it. At least he is being open, honest and straight forward. The only rationale I can think for not taking more risks with the play calling against good teams is...that the coaching staff is staying we are going to lineup and call the game straight up and if we aren't good enough than so be it we need to get better. Not suggesting they aren't trying to win the games, just that they aren't going to change their style or approach because we don't have their guys yet. I'm not a big fan of that approach, as I want to see the Pokes do everything to win every game; however I will admit we are rebuilding and if it gets us to a point of being a perennial MWC contender than I will be ok with results. I guess only time will tell. Though if we aren't above .500 next year I admit I will start getting antsy.

Hindsight is always 20/20. I go by the philosophy that you should always go for 4th and very short if you are midfield or in the others teams half.

But you can't crucify him for that decision. It was our first possession of the game, we didn't know we weren't going to be able to stop BYU the entire game.

I personally agree with you calpoke, just saying that I think I see what DC is doing.

GO POKES!
