25-26 Basketball Roster

Good afternoon, gents. Stony Brook fan here. Beautiful area of the country you have out there.

What’s the word on Kojenets? He looks a little clumsy/oafy on video. What does he do well? Relatively speaking of course.

I appreciate the feedback. These highlight videos tend to make guys look better than they are. And when they don’t look that good on it, geez, I’m holding my breath.

You've got him pegged. He's had a couple flashes of showing that he can play at the D1 level, but they are few and far between. I'd say the only things he's got going for him are that he's 7 feet tall and is a good free throw shooter. The rest of his game is VERY rudimentary.

Signing players does not equal kicking our ass. There are still a TON of players in the portal that are looking at their options. Lots of hold outs due to NIL, which is keeping more players on the radar of larger programs. Sunny has his work cut out for him to build a good roster.
I don't know man, when you see quite a few D1 P4 athletes transfer in to other schools, while we cream our jeans over the NAIA talent...

Well, I am likely biased, but here is my dime:

Kornnuts has hands of stone, but he runs like a newborn Giraffe on acid.

Craig Bohl taught me to never trust hype. I have moved off of skepticism and am now a full-blown cynic when it comes to UW and UW athletics. Puff pieces and any excitement over how a random coach or 18–21-year-old kid is going to halt our inexorable march to being anything more than "meh" (at best) are wastes of time and energy. Until we win championships or simply show the ability to hit the broad side of a barn with a beach ball from 2 feet away, color me unimpressed by NAIA, D2, and most sub-3 star HS recruits. Doing otherwise means swallowing the mediocre artificial plastic worm that UW has been fishing and fooling us with for decades. I can't even bring myself to "trust and verify" these days. Going forward, show me. Prove it. Win.

Our best portal players have been D2 and NAIA transfers. I’m all for it. We aren’t coming up with the money for the most sought after guys.
And there isn't a player on the roster (Obi excluded) who would see the floor on any of the top 7 or 8 teams in the MW. You get what you pay for. It gets you the bottom 3 in the conference and a 1st round exit in the MW tourney.

I am fine not paying players. In fact, it is my preference. Nothing stops you from opening up your wallet and buying whoever you think you can buy for the team. Give Sunny a call and let him know. But if you really put any stock into this past year's team as some representation of the program under Sunny, then I believe you are totally unreasonable considering the portal period had closed before he was even hired.

What does it matter if the portal is open or closed when you can't afford to buy? We couldn't even afford to pay the one good player we had. I'll be happy to eat crow if next year's team finishes in the top half of the conference. And no need to be so fxking glib. The school has plenty of money for facilities but paying players is not their priority. That's fine. But to think we can recruit adequate talent without spending money is just fantasy, imo.

Ya, they are, you are right. And that has led to 15 & 17, and 12 & 20 the last two seasons. SO, my thought is, if we don't give a shit about competing for championships, we should continue to do what we have been doing. Something has to change right? LOL

I guess you are not going to be happy that we just signed someone today from D2 Lake Superior State.

Once again - to get sought after D1 portal transfers, folks have to open their pocket books to pay those guys. I believe that is a colossal waste of money and I’m not putting a dime to it.

Not all players are going to get paid, there is only so much $$$$ to go around. That said, if we continue to load up on NAIA - D3 and similar players (freebies), we will be getting NAIA - D3 and similar results (which in our conference - new MW or old MW - will equal more losing seasons).

Sorry, but may as well close the doors, if there is never going to be a shot (or true desire) at competing for championships at UW, because we love to bring in talent that basically cannot compete - other than the rare unicorn player like Obi and/or Kot. And let's face it, without Obi, we win maybe 6 games last year...and he was on an island, with NO talent around him whatsoever.

No bueno.

They say that athletics are the "front porch" of the university. It appears that our porch will be a great reflection of the rest of our operation: a 2x4 and plywood deck with no railing...on the side of a 1973 metal-sided single-wide trailer with tires on the roof, a screen door hanging off of one hinge with a torn screen, a 1980 Buick Skylark on blocks in the front yard, a skunk living under the busted up plastic skirting surrounding the place, and a chain link fence with a pit bull patrolling to attack anyone that has a new or different idea.

I think history has shown that we are wasting our time picking up P4 basketball players who couldn’t hack it at those programs and who are largely ignored by other big programs. I can’t think of a single such transfer at Wyoming who was great other than maybe Leonard Washington. So you really believe the Jake Kyman’s and Max Agbonkpolo’s are going to make Wyoming a decent team?

Kot and Obi were both guys way overlooked but came in hungry. If we can assemble a team of 4-5 of those guys and fill in the gaps , we could be pretty good. There’s a hell of a lot more talent in JUCO and D2 than you believe. Drake Jeffries ring a bell?

No, I don't - that isn't my point. But that is (odds speaking) a much better chance at success, than trying to get 4 or 5 retreads from NAIA or D3, that may or may not even be able to keep up with our competition, and will be here for a year, or maybe two.

Drake was pre NIL. So, really was Kyman and Agbonk. My point stands, if Wyoming wants to make the dance and win a Conf Championship, it isn't going to happen with NAIA / D3 basketball players. I hope to be proven wrong in the future, but I think that is highly unlikely.
