2025

Well, the 2024 disaster is over. I'm not as high on the ending as some. The wsu game was a good win. We were a layup for bsu and they played/coached like it. If Jenty touches the ball 30+ times, that game wouldn't have been in reach. Water under the bridge now.

My hopes for the new year:
1) PBJ makes huge strides in game and team management. His recruiting wasn't bad and I like how he seems to solicit mentorship which indicates he knows some of his shortcomings and is willing to work on them. That's a good trait.

2) Svoboda is all-conference TE before going landing on an NFL team via draft.

3) Anderson stays healthy and we see a full good year.

4) PBJ oversees most of the D even if daddy's money gets the credit. I hope the bruising D is back.

5) Waylee ends on a healthy and highly productive season.

6) always a conference championship.

If you are shooting for the stars might as well add in making the playoffs and hosting a game.

I'm not disagreeing but there's a few in there that are attainable. Waylee and Anderson could stay healthy, and, if they do, I think they'll have good years.

Svoboda could have a solid year at TE. All-conference and draft might be a stretch.

PBJ might improve and taking over the d would be a good start.

The conference? Yeah, probably as likely as the playoffs.

There is a decent chance of that if we actually won a MWC championship next season because that would mean we beat Boise State in order to do it. Assuming we have a good enough team to do that, we should have a good enough team to potentially win all the other games on the schedule.

What is going on!?!? Talk of conference championships and playoffs.

I’ve seen enough of this staff to make an educated guess where things are headed. I believe we will be lucky next year to meet or exceed this year’s 3 wins. The defense will be basically a brand new unit.

I'm with you on these "hopes"....but I'm not holding my breath.

One question... Just how high on the season do you perceive some to be? I would imagine almost everybody was pleasantly surprised by not getting 50 hung on us by BSU and by the win in Pullman .... Is that what you are talking about?

I think in the media and some of the fans felt the ending to be a positive sign that maybe PBJ and daddy's money were starting to figure things out or that somehow the ending bought them a little more rope.

Next year will be worse than 106?

Side note: ds ranked lower than us. suds, wsu, usu, and UNM. Crazy how terrible the mwc really is.
Yes. I am predicting a not so good defense next year.

You are right - this year might have been the worst MWC ever. Look at Sagarin and other computer index ratings. The conference was loaded with teams all ranked over 100. If not for Boise, arguably the MAC was a better overall conference this year.

You could be right. With high turnover, coaching matters more and I'm not sold on daddy's money.

I can go along with a less than stellar performance by the defense and at the same time there is no excuse with the portal to not fill some holes and blend in with the past recruiting.

2025 will be an absolute measure of the ability of this staff to identify needs and not be afraid to tell some they need to look elsewhere. The players have the option to leave and too bad so sad the programs paying for the “performers” also have the option to say you are on if you stay.

If Sawvel is true to his word he did indicate not everyone is going to be staying. With the numbers of HS signed and the numbers said to still be in pursuit we will find out if a remedy can be applied quickly or not.

I’m convinced Bohl was only a healthy Kaden Anderson with a Waylee Harrison and a stout receiver away from being a decent offense.

I do feel that there were not always the recruits to replace the loses. On D we have enjoyed some stout players and any drop off that level of play along with the perpetual inept offense is a recipe for what we witnessed in 2024.

If USU can be conference champions with one recruiting season we can at least get back to the 7+ category since the MWC has a number of vulnerable teams. We really shouldn’t have been any worse than 6-6 in 2024.

We have no alternative but to hope for the better. I do think we have some nice incoming signings but it will be recruiting round 2 of signings now and the late period that determines the potential for 2025.

mmm....well the ending was objectively better than the beginning but that is the definition of "damning with faint praise". The best I see in the fan base is apathy and a smattering of die-hards bending themselves into knots to find a glimmer of silver lining involving the coaches figuring it out .... I don't see it. The pokes will do better next year if the staff has a pulse but it won't matter....they aren't going anywhere with this regime.

Looking back at the Boise and WSU games - it was the players we are losing on defense who really kept us in those games. They stepped up in their last hurrah with this program so congrats to them! Those same guys also were great under Craig Bohl the previous few years. So don’t let those games skew your view too much.

The only other positive I really saw was the Sawvel realization to slow the game down and huddle the offense to give us a chance to keep the game close and then pull off a possible 4th qtr win. Hopefully we stick to that.

I’m hoping that the staff started figuring things out by the end of the year. If the portal stays quiet, like it has so far, I think there’s reason to believe it will be a good year next year. Wins against Akron and N. Iowa could build some positive momentum, and a win against Utah could be huge. After that, the MWC games will be about the same as last year. AFA will be better, but everyone else seems to be getting gutted by the portal so we may be just fine. Boise without Jeanty will be interesting. They may have a bit of a rebuild year. Never know! Maybe the Pokes will have an amazing year!

I like your enthusiasm. Hope springs eternal!

Just unfortunately I don’t see it. Hope I’m wrong. I certainly didn’t predict the 2016 MWC championship appearance. But watching Josh Allen this year has me thinking - ‘how the hell did we lose to any MWC teams with that guy?’

The same way Buffalo lost yesterday. Steve Stanard was our DC and we gave up 70 to UNLV and nearly 60 to NM. As great as he was, in 2017, we had posters on this board blaming him for low offensive output. All his weapons had graduated and Brian Hill went pro. Doesn't matter how good you are, there are still 11 guys who have to perform. If Josh was playing for Andy Reid, he'd have at least 2 superbowl rings now. But he has a sh@t for brains coach who couldn't stop KC for 13 seconds.

I think if he and Mahomes switched places they would basically also switch records. Allen would have the rings and the MVPs and Mahomes the almost getting them.

I think, if things fall right, we could win 6-7 next year. Utah (who will be much better next year) and Colorado back to back in the non-conference is a nightmare. Despite our history of bowl game success against the MAC, going on the road to Akron will be tough because its on the road. So I would be pleased with 2-2 before conference play starts. Could we go 5-3 in conference next year? Sure. I hope so. But if the current staff can't make critical adjustments until game 8 or 9 again then well..... Also, as always depth is going to be an issue when the injuries start happening.
