2018 MWC Football skeds are out!

We start the year in Las Cruces, NM and end the year in Albuquerque. Somehow I'm not surprised.
 
Boise comes to town for the conference opener

at NMSU
vs. Washington State
at Missouri
vs. Wofford
BYE
vs. Boise
at Hawaii
at Fresno
vs. Utah State
at CSU
vs. San Jose
BYE
vs. Air Force
at New Mexico
 
The bye weeks set up perfectly!!! 2 weeks to prepare for Boise...then 2 weeks to prepare for the option teams back to back.
 
That’s a challenging, front loaded schedule. It feels like the NMSU game is very big, lose that and we could be staring at a rocky 1-4, 1-5 start to the season. I’m not as bullish on this team as some are apparently. Feels like a 5-7, 6-6 team. Hope I’m wrong.

I think our defense is going to make quite a few teams quit. I don't think we have ever had a d line that is as talented and deep as we will this next season. Let alone one of the best if not the best safety in the Country. I know everybody was blinded with the Josh Hype train but we didn't win games last season because of offensive production. We won because we forced 38 turnovers and were in the top 25 in every defensive statistical category. We will be far from a pushover this coming season that I can assure you.

The optimists will recall the CMU game, the pessimists will recall the SJSU game (nobody in their right mind thought a loss was possible there in the off-season). Questions abound. IMO, 6-6/7-5 are the likeliest results...but anything from missing a bowl altogether to division championship is on the table.

I agree, that NMSU game is going to be a huge tone setter. Challenging first half of the schedule.

That turnover margin is not sustainable over the long run. It will regress to the mean, not to mention we can expect more TOs from the offense this year without Josh. I agree the defense will be very good but questions abound on the other side of the ball, especially QB. You have to be able to score some points. We can’t win every game 10-7.

I can’t get the SJSU game out of my head. I really hope you’re right.
 
The first 5 games with a new QB are going to be quite a challenge. I'm all for optimism as this coaching staff deserves it but at QB we have Nick Smith (who isn't very good) and a redshirt freshman in Vander Waal who I think has great talent but will be learning on the job IF he plays.

I agree but I’d say the first 7 games really. @Hawaii @ Fresno after Boise St is rough as well. I don’t think it lets up until the USU game.

There’s a real possibility of a pretty rough start to the season given our QB situation.
 
If our O-line actually starts the year decent and Overstreet continues where he left off (and he actually gets most of the carries), I think whoever ends up at QB won't have to do much more than manage games early on.

I hope Vander Waal is ready to go. At least he too, is big with a decent arm and moves around fairly well. He just doesn't throw rocket-propelled balls.
 
I think our defense will be even better next year but you have to score points on offense to win games. We can't bank our our defense holding other teams to low teens each game. I am very concerned about our run game and our qb sittuation as well as our wrs... really our whole offense gives me pause from saying we are going to go bowling for a third consecutive year. I hope there are MAJOR improvements especially in our running game. If not....gulp
 
Gonna have to win a lot of games 10-7, 7-3, etc. I don't see how this team scores next year unless there is some magical quarterback I don't know about waiting in the wings.
 
The run game will likely improve. I think oversteet can be good, Woods will get a full year of training and could be pushing 230 with his frame. A full year of James Price and Jared Scott will help the WR corp. I think we surprise on offense.
 
I agree about Overstreet. I don't think the way Woods runs will ever lend itself to being successful.
I also think the O-Line being a year older will make a difference for the run.

But still... I hope Vander Waal learned a lot during his redshirt year.

Agreed. If Woods was shifted to receiver, with his hands, speed, and size? He'd make a solid target. But he just does not have the RB sense to him.
