BOISE – At 7,220 feet, the elevation of War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, Wyoming, is higher than that of any other FBS school.

But that doesn’t mean the Broncos are doing anything crazy to prepare for Saturday’s game at Wyoming. In fact, the Broncos aren’t really doing anything different at all.

“There’s so many other things to talk about with Wyoming and the way they are playing,” Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said. “That’s probably the last thing we’re focused on, the altitude there.

Boise State’s special teams struggles prompt a renewed focus (Idaho Statesman)

Boise State’s special teams efficiency is No. 122 out of 128 Football Bowl Subdivision schools, according to ESPN stats.

The list of woes is ugly: three muffed punts (two recovered by opponents), three failed onside kick recovery attempts (including consecutive ones against Colorado State), a field goal blocked (3-of-6 on field goals overall), and a 100-yard kickoff return for a TD allowed.

Wyoming hitting a kickoff or punt return for a TD finally would be a great way to start the game/a half.

“We’re just trying to go 1-0 this week. We’re going against a 13th-ranked Boise State team. We know they’re going to be really good. It’s about preparation and getting down to the nitty-gritty details of what they do really well and try to exploit them. It’s sweet to have all those other incentives. It’s a big step for us and we’re looking forward to the challenge.” — UW redshirt sophomore quarterback Josh Allen.

Las Vegas Bowl director checking out Wyoming, Boise State football this weekend (Las Vegas Review-Journal)

Where is John Saccenti this week? Somewhere he hasn’t been in a decade.

The Las Vegas Bowl executive director is in Laramie, Wyoming, for Saturday’s Mountain West game between Wyoming (5-2) and Boise State (7-0).

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been in Laramie,” Saccenti said. “If Wyoming figures out a way to upset Boise State, that changes the whole landscape of the Mountain West. We would definitely be interested in Wyoming. The fans there are great.”

No problem, CowboyNV. Thanks. I might as well post the material I'm reading through daily on this forum. It doesn't take much to copy and paste.

STORY: Sperbeck one of Mountain West’s best players despite smaller stature (WyoSports.net)

“He’s a football player; that’s the best way to put it,” Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said. “I’ve seen some really pretty dudes out there, and we have a few of them, but sometimes there are guys with savvy, know-how to play the game and has supreme confidence in what he’s going to do and how he’s going to do it. That’s Thomas.

STORY: UW redshirt freshman defensive tackle Ghaifan had a lot of help to get where he’s at today (WyoSports.net)

“I don’t think I’ve ever talked to him and not had him laugh, smile and show that great personality,” UW interior defensive line coach Pete Kaligis said. “He shows that in everything he does.”

Ghaifan’s roommate, UW sophomore nose tackle Sidney Malauulu, described Ghaifan as “a natural” as a defensive tackle.

“I’ve seen him move 300-pounders, and he’s going sideways,” Malauulu said. “He’s literally tossing guys sideways. I remember the Nebraska game this year where he threw the guard into the running back. He does things I’ve never seen before.”

First place on the line as Boise State visits Wyoming (B.J. Rains)

“We’re playing for the same thing,” Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said. “It’s as big as it gets. Everybody knows our goal and we haven’t been bashful about that. Our goal is to win our conference, and certainly in order to do that, you have to win the Mountain Division.

“And guess what? Wyoming is there, both teams are undefeated, and we have to go play there. Yeah, this is as big as it gets.”

Players to watch when No. 13 Boise State visits Wyoming (Idaho Statesman)

JOSH ALLEN, QUARTERBACK

A 6-5, 220-pound sophomore, Allen transferred from Reedley (Calif.) Community College in 2015 and redshirted after an injury ended his year in the second game. He’s been solid this season as a passer, throwing for 1,339 yards and 10 touchdowns. And he can run as the Cowboys’ second-leading rusher with 278 yards and five touchdowns. He had a 4-yard touchdown catch last week against Nevada, a play he tries to make one-handed in practice, but used two, much to his coach’s happiness.

“I think I have the best hands on the team. … I’m a confident guy,” Allen said.

Wyoming-Boise State notebook: Hollister’s career day helps Wyoming to upset win against Broncos (WyoSports.net)

Jacob Hollister came into Saturday’s game with No. 13-ranked Boise State third on the University of Wyoming receiving list with 10 catches for 112 yards on the season.

“It was just my day to make plays, and when I had my chance, I did,” said Hollister. “(Wyoming quarterback) Josh (Allen) made great reads, and the O-line protected, and the rest was history.

“It was a great feeling to produce for my team. I just can’t stop smiling.”

Stepping stone: Cowboys' win over No. 13 Boise State signals a big step forward for Cowboys (WyoSports.net)

The game-winning points came from senior nose tackle Chase Appleby, who is listed at 6-foot and 268 pounds. He forced a fumble from Boise State sophomore quarterback Brett Rypien, and the ball went out of the back of the end zone for a safety.

UW sophomore free safety Andrew Wingard joked that Appleby is pushing it being listed at 6-foot and 268 pounds. Wingard also said Appleby epitomizes what this UW team is all about.

“He’s out there mugging offensive linemen against 13th-ranked Boise State, and that’s the culture we are building,” Wingard said. “We are blue-collar, go out and punch you in the mouth. That’s what made us successful tonight.”

Added Bohl about Appleby: “He has a heart as big as the state of Wyoming.”

Matt L. Stephens: Wyoming football returns to prominence by muddying its boots (Coloradoan.com)

For the first time since the 1990s, Wyoming football is back, and it’s a terrifying thought for anyone outside the Cowboy State. There’s a hard-working, dusty boot fan base that’s going to have something to celebrate for years to come and it’s going to be hard for any Mountain West team can slow down this caravan that perfectly represents Sarah and the bulk of its state’s population.
