Wyoming Cowboys use 2nd-half surge to beat DePaul in Las Vegas Classic opener (WyoSports.net)

“Our defense was the biggest key for us in the second half,” Herndon said. “We got more stops and more transition buckets. We sat down more defensively.”

First-year coach Allen Edwards said his team switched from man-to-man to a zone in the second half, which he was pleased with.

SO CLOSE: Cowboys fall to No. 23 USC in overtime (WyoSports.net)

“This was nothing to hang our heads about, and we put ourselves in position to win a championship,” first-year UW coach Allen Edwards said.

Dalton and sophomore guard Justin James both made the all-tournament team. Dalton recorded his fourth consecutive double-double with 18 points and a career-best 18 rebounds. James had 23 points.

“In a situation like that, I’d rather our guys just go play basketball than call a time out to try to set something up,” Edwards said. “Jeremy had the ball in his hands, other guys were running, he kept it and it was a good look.”

Nulph column: Wyoming hoops eager to prove pundits wrong — just like football (WyoSports.net)

Maybe, just maybe, losing their best players actually made the Cowboys and Cowgirls better teams.

Adams and Dent will each go down as two of the top players in UW men’s and women’s basketball history. Both players have their names firmly entrenched among the all-time leaders in several statistical categories. And Adams will always be remembered for his MW tournament play a couple years back that helped the Cowboys win the postseason title and make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 13 years.

Wyoming men's basketball opens conference play with Air Force (trib.com)

"We were picked 10th in our conference, so we have a chip on our shoulders," junior Hayden Dalton said. "We’re going out there to fight every game. We played really hard (against Southern California), and I think it just shows us how good we can be. Especially when we play together like we did and fight together as a team."

Said sophomore Justin James: "They said we’re going to finish last. We’re not going to finish last in this conference at all."

Air Force opens Mountain West play against new-look Wyoming (The Gazette)

"They're playing a lot faster than they have in the past. We are, too," Falcons coach Dave Pilipovich said. "So maybe it will be a different game, not 48-43 like it's been in the past."

"We've had three really good, spirited practices since we've been back," said Pilipovich, whose players had a short holiday break after returning home on the evening of the 22nd and then reconvening at the academy on the afternoon of the 25th. "Our guys are fresh and I think they're excited."

Wyoming hits reset button as Mountain West play begins (WyoSports.net)

“I still believe we can get better on the defensive end of the floor with our edge, activity and finishing with a rebound,” Edwards said.

The glaring concern from Edwards’ more up-tempo offensive philosophy is turnovers. UW averages 14.3 per game, compared to 11.2 last season. In the Cowboys’ three losses, they’ve averaged 17 turnovers, and foes have averaged 19.3 points of those miscues. No. 23 USC scored 23 points off 17 UW turnovers in the Cowboys’ 94-92 overtime loss last Friday in Las Vegas.

“It’s more so due to us being careless than defenses forcing them,” Edwards said of UW’s turnover issues.

Wyoming men's basketball defeats Air Force 84-72 to open Mountain West play (trib.com)

"I thought our guys came out with a really good focus," Wyoming head coach Allen Edwards said. "Especially when you think about the team we were going against, within the Princeton offense, having to adjust what you do defensively because of what they like to take advantage of. I thought our guys did a good job in two days prepping for it, and it showed carry-over."

Wyoming basketball wins MW opener at home against Falcons (WyoSports.net)

“We would have liked to finish stronger on the back end (Air Force outscored UW 9-2 in the final 3 minutes, 32 seconds of the game), but overall this was a great team effort,” said Herndon, who also had seven rebounds and three blocked shots. “We came out focused, ready to play and guard the action Air Force showed to us.”

“I struggled for a couple of games after my concussion, so it felt good to get back to making plays and get into that rhythm I had at the beginning of the season,” Aka Gorski said.
