Jacobson: Rebounding problems 'have to change' for UNI (Des Moines Register)

Correcting the rebound discrepancy is the top objective as the Panthers (3-3) head to Wyoming (4-2) for Saturday’s 2 p.m. showdown as part of the Missouri Valley/Mountain West Challenge.

“It has to change,” Jacobson said, “and it doesn’t matter if we’re talking about this team or last year’s team or next year’s team, you have to rebound the basketball — and everybody understands that. So that part of it needs to change.”

No rematch as Cowboys host Panthers (WyoSports.net)

“We know we have shooters, and our confidence level is high when we let it go,” said sophomore guard Justin James, who leads the Cowboys with 17.7 points per game. “As long as our confidence level is high, we’ll be all right.”

Definitely wouldn't call it a rematch. Here are the minutes played in that game by current players:

Wyoming: Herndon 14, McManamen 8, Barnes 1, Aka Gorski 1, Lieberman 1
No Iowa: W. Lohaus 22, Morgan 18

LARAMIE – Allen Edwards sent Cody Kelley back into the game after Jeremy Lieberman committed his fourth turnover early in the second half Saturday afternoon.

Kelley never came out of the University of Wyoming’s 81-73 victory over Northern Iowa at Arena-Auditorium.

“He steadied the ship, got us in the offense, played with a level of toughness and made some open shots – some timely shots,” Edwards said. “He defended well and the unit that was out there had everything going right and I didn’t want to mess with it.

Bench play helps Cowboys basketball stay unbeaten at home (trib.com)

“I thought Hayden played a really good game tonight,” Edwards said. “And he’s actually been playing well all year. The only difference is the shots weren’t falling, and they went in tonight.”

“The shots were falling because they were wide-open looks,” Kelley said. “We were making one extra pass and the shooters had their feet set and were ready to shoot.”

“It wasn’t one of our best performances,” first-year coach Allen Edwards said. “We were more focused on them being a Division II school rather than a credible program to play against at this particular time.

“I got on them about our energy. I told them that if we were at practice, my whistle would blow and guys would be on the line running. Or, I would have kicked them out of practice.”

Wyoming men's basketball struggles to maintain energy after big win over Northern Iowa (trib.com)

“(I) kind of tried to warn our guys a little bit coming off the Northern Iowa win and what’s in their minds of playing against a Division-II team and thinking that it was supposed to be easy or it should be easy,” Edwards said. “But letting them know that I thought, after watching (Colorado Christian) on tape, I thought they were actually a really, really good team and posed problems because of them playing with five regular guards. Not like five skill guys. Their guys were 6-5 and all could dribble, pass and shoot.”

Wyoming men's basketball continues to shoot despite low percentages (trib.com)

Take out their performance against the Panthers, and Wyoming is shooting 40.9 percent from the floor, which would be worst in the conference and 302nd nationally, and 29.06 percent from 3-point range, which would also be 11th in the Mountain West and 323rd nationally.

The Cowboys have taken more 3-point shots than any other Mountain West team. They don't plan to stop now.

Wyoming men's basketball takes on Montana for second time this season (trib.com)

“(It) presents another challenge to get mentally and physically prepared for a team that we beat on the road,” he said. “Sometimes after beating a team, you think it should be easy the second time around. But it’s our job as a coaching staff to get our guys mentally and physically ready for our battle with these guys.”

Montana's men's basketball: Griz seek redemption at Wyoming (missoulian.com)

“When we played them last time, we were left with a bad taste in our mouths,” Griz junior Fabijan Krslovic said. “It’s a game that we thought we could have won, our first game at home. It kind of hurts that they came here and took that from us. We have to go there and be aggressive, use this momentum, watch film and see what we’re doing right.”

“Montana gave us problems, but throughout the game it was about staying the course and getting a little bit more energy and effort on the defensive end of the floor and finishing with rebounds,” first-year coach Allen Edwards said.

“Eighty-three points is way too much to be giving up, and that’s an area we have to consistently get better at,” Edwards said. “I have no problem on the offensive end of the floor. Even on a bad shooting night, it’s the defense that has to hold us.”
