$5.25 Million For Football Players

That’s great. Be cool if it said where the money came from.
I believe they are probably just shifting dollars around. ‘Revenue share’ to pay players from media dollars, ticket sales, and concessions. Those dollars used to go to fund the program, athletic department and scholarships.

The legislature granted an additional $6 million ($3 million per year) last year for athletics to the university framed by the university as needed to cover escalating travel and health care costs. The legislature banned using those funds for ‘NIL.’

So take those legislative funds and pay for operating costs and then take the media and ticket revenues and pay players is my guess. Just moving dollars around. If there were large donations from donors to cover these new player payments, pretty sure we would have heard of it.

That is a lot of money dedicated to a single men's sport. No doubt football drives the revenue bus and gets the most attention but I have to wonder if a top-notch mens BB team might not be a great revenue producer as well.

I highly doubt men’s bball even turns a profit

Basketball is the easiest sport to turn around. If they gave the men's basketball team $5MM to work with they'd immediately be contending for the NCAA tournament.
I disagree with this from a financial perspective (sure if you have a billionaire donor and throw a bunch of money at something like Texas Tech you will probably have more wins but it won’t balance the check book, and, it would not be consistent with the theoretical idea behind ‘revenue share’ which is to take moneys earned by a program and return it to those players).

The media dollars are not there for basketball. 85%+ of the conference media deal is for football rights.

Take a look at the numbers from FY2025 (when Wyoming football sucked):

Football ticket sales - $3.82 million
Football media rights - $3.42 million

Basketball Ticket Sales - $681,000
Basketball Media Revenue - $207,000

Basketball ticket and media revenues don’t even cover the cost of the coaching staff. Media revenues are locked for the next 5 years. Ticket sales aren’t going to increase 10X with a tournament caliber team, let’s be realistic.

NIL and unlimited transfers have ruined college sports. Schools with huge budgets will simply outbid smaller programs for top talent.
**Schools with large donors who just want to see wins will simply outbid other programs.

There is a reason schools like BYU, SMU, Texas Tech, Indiana are now all nationally relevant programs when they were pretty marginal for decades before the new pay for play system.

Thank you! You should write articles for 7220. lol

They have one but they're using him as a Tight End
Are you referring to the grandkid Siddons? He looks like a tight end to me.

Or are you referring to Jake Wilson? He seems to have natural route running ability and good hands so maybe you could line him up wide. Wyoming once had a receiver with similar size Jake Maulhardt who was successful in his career.

Haha, thank you. I like Cody but don’t think I’d fit their culture. As far as I know, Jay Sawvel doesn’t have anything incriminating on me and thus my articles would not be routinely full of sunshine and roses when describing the coaching.

Maybe not.

I am not sure spending $5m on men's basketball puts WYO in the top 75-100 of NIL budgets in the NCAA. And likely puts us at 5th in our own conference as well.
