Without reviewing Walden’s contract, this article states that UTEP is only on the hook for the annual $500,000 base salary if they fire him.

Sawvel’s base salary is $350,000. But rather than make only the base salary guaranteed (which would have made sense), Burman gave Sawvel a contract that guaranteed both the base salary AND ‘additional compensation’ for a total $1.25 million per year.

AND Walden was at least a head coach poached from another program whereas Sawvel had never been. I’d say we are much worse off than UTEP in terms of how we approached coach hiring.
